Subject: BIOS Virus?
Comment:

I've been told by a freind that I may have a BIOS virus on my compaq presario as I cannot use my keyboard (therefore cannot attempt to reformat my hd, mouse funtions are ok, but trying to open any window or menu causes chaos. Is there any way of getting rid of this without the assistance of a keyboard? Is it true that athough risky, as a last resort I could try removing the battery on the motherboard?

Any help, suggestions would be greatfully appriciated.

Use the last option, removing the battery

If it is a BIOS virus, it would be CIH.
It could be a bad keyboard. Try using a different keyboard.
As for the "Windows causing chaos"...What exactly do you mean?

You may have some sort of worm on your computer. The reason the mem usage is so high is because there is a process running on the computer that is used to copy the worm into your files. press ctrl-alt-del and look for a win***.exe process. This may be the thing causing all your trouble. NExt try to identify the virus and look up the fix for it.

Ok, this one really has me stumped. Infected system fills "kkkkkk" into log in boxes etc. Occassionally takes over control, and very difficult stay ahead of say in the command line. I have reformatted twice, pulled the battery on the Mboard while disconnecting the power cord. Yet it keeps coming back. Anyone heard of this???

Hello,

I was wondering if you guys can help me?

Is there such a beast as a virus that travels via mapped network drives, resides in the bios of a machine and reboots the infected machine randomly? What is it?

The reason I ask is that several of my friends and I recently setup a LAN for gaming. One of the PC’s had an issue rebooting that I believed to be power supply related before any link was established. After being networked to this PC all of my friends PC’s exhibit the same problem. VET (as of 25/07/02) does not detect anything!

I have booted with a floppy into DOS to find that formatting all drives has no effect; only flashing the BIOS has got rid of this problem.

This is the strangest PC error I have seen yet?
