I just purchased a renewal for my subscription to my virus protection. I will not tell you the company, but I will tell you it's not Macafee and it is another big named company just as popular. Anyhow when I renewed the subscription, it renewed for 1 computer but not the other. If you're thinking I need to purchase 2 as it's on 2 computers, that would be incorrect as I have the proffessional version that supports up to 2 computers. Anyhow I'm ranting so others to be aware of this scam!!! I emailed customer service and their response (or fix) would be to upgrade to proffesional 2005. What the #%^? What kind of fix is that?
Buyers be aware before you purchase a renewal. Get the free version of AVG, I will be from now on!!!!!We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

I've been down that road before. I spoke with a live TS representative of a popular AV. The rep told me the only way to get rid of the annoying subscription reminder was by renewing my client's subscription and that there was no other way. He was full of sh*t. I removed all trace of it by cleaning it out in the registry.

I'm on the phone with them now waiting, will let you know if I get the same response. I responded to the email with " I ask for a fix and you tell me to upgrade? What kind of service is that?" Threw in a couple threats to contact BBB and am awaiting a response to that.

The fix is available on kazza and limewire. LOL!!

Thanks per, I needed that!!
Right now the man from India (figures) is telling me to uninstall the program. i asked him why and have been holding for 10 minutes. We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

I am dealing with a moron here!!!!
Per, that joke link you sent for support last week is a perfect fit here!!!
If you can't fix it, blow it up and deny that you saw anything.

I was just being facetious. Sorry. With Norton uninstall is always the first page of any problem. Then you have to get into the uninstall tools and all the rest of it. I have been running Norton for years and still feel it is the best out there., although the reviews say NOD32 is the best. Good luck.

I posted after you. Yes, I believe that.

I was laughing about the "thanks I needed that", I did not take offense. Sorry to make it sound like I was upset.

No problem. Obviously you are upset and I don't blame you. I wasn't aware Symantec had moved tech support to India, but I am not surprised. I have been to India and I understand why these people are working for $5 a day.

I'm about ready to jump thru the phone and strangle this guy

That would be too humane. He should have to sit in front of a machine with a trashed O/S and have to talk to someone in Russia or china for days to fix it.

After performing a few tasks he tells me to adjust the dat and time, So I ask him what date and time he wants me to adjust it to. He commences to tell me how I adjust it and we go through an Abbott and Costello routine until He finally understands me and tells me to adjust it to the current date (which by the way never changed). When all is said and done I'm supposed to uninstall and reinstall the program and it's supposed to be fixed. Now here's where my being stupid comes in (I can't find the CD). Anyhow I hope someone gets a chuckle out of this, right now I'm too pissed to look for the CD. Thanks for lending a shoulder (again).

As I said, Symantec's 1st response is ALWAYS uninstall and reinstall. The next thing is to get the uninstall tool from the website because the uninstall never works because the registry is filled with crap. Then you go back and delete all the files and registry entries for Norton and Symantec. It is a very nasty registry intrusive program.
Then If you are lucky you can put the cd in and install it. If that works, fine. If It doesn't you get to go back and start all over again.
I Have done this a number of times but I won't let the b---tards beat me!If you don't have the courtesy to reply if the fix worked we may not have the courtesy of helping you next time.

dog, that's the link I was refering that per posted a little while back, but thanks for reposting it, it is a good one.
XPuser, loved it!!!
per thanks for the input, When I fond the cd I will keep all that in mind.We can fix this, but you're gonna need a butter knife, a roll of duct tape, and a car battery

That link was sent to me by my son who is a tech running 700 computers. It's all the same anymore. 1 or 700.

Angrymen, had to repost the link as it seems so appropriate. I can sympathise with you, have had to clean 'unnamed AV' from a few comps now. AVG seems pretty good now, regular (sometimes 3 a day) definition updates, and the free forum isn't bad either.
Hope it works out for you.D4Dog

I have been saying this for 4 years, they have always treated their customers this way, besides their bloat ware, I bought it because it said it would protect your email (4) years and I don't know about now but then when I got a virus they told me because I had outlook their virus could not guarantee protection, I argued over the internet for weeks, uninstalled it and will never use it again. AVG is great.

In the 10 years of using Norton's AV I have never paid for a annual renewal subscription.
I reformat and reinstall XP and all of my apps after 11 months whether it need it or not. I then start of with a fresh 1 year subscription.
I replace NAV every 2-3 years...
...

I also do what wombat does. Or you can uninstall and clean the registry entries, reinstall and get the subscription back. but that is a pain sometimes. or you can do a search ( i recommend crackspider.net search engine) and maybe you will find something that will give you free updates for say about 50 years.
Please keep us updated so we know if we helped you or not.

FYI,
the Norton uninstall utility they make you download does absolutely nothing.
The best thing to do is to run a search in your registry for Norton and Symantec and delete all traces after you uninstall the program. Also make sure you delete the common files folder and any other Norton/symantec files and folders left from the uninstall.
Its just ridiculous we have to go through such chaos to uninstall a program properly.BS!!!Asus A8V Deluxe Rev.2

You must be talking about Norton, who else?
I have also bought the PRO version before with 2 seats but jhave never had that problem.
Remember, there is AVG fREE and AVAST both of which I've installed on others PCs. I used AVG on test machine of mine last year for 6 months and had it set to surf to all kinds of porn, gambling and free sites and honestly I never got infected. But remember a layered approach
is key to PC security. So use a router with NAT and wireless can be real tricky.

Assuming you're running 2000 or XP the file that contains the subscription information is "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveSubscribe\catalog.livesubscribe".
Copy the file from the machine where the subscription worked to the one that didn't and you should then have identical subscriptions on both machines. (It might be a good idea to backup the catalog.livesubscribe first, just in case)
Hope that helps.
