what it the best free reg cleaner on the market tried cc cleaner no very good tried reg mechanic but ltd unless i pay
The simplest solutions are the best and they are often save you money

I've studied the behaviour of several registry cleaners in some depth, particularly noting whether they are capable of restoring backups of registry entries "correctly" or not.
RegSeeker is one of few that does this properly (others get it butt about face and can loose keys on restore).
I can elaborate on just why some others fail if you wish but it's a bit long and boring.Unfortunately RegSeeker is also the one I've found that has more often removed keys which were valid (and that includes green ones). This was verified by repeated experiment, on programs which stopped working every time until the entries were restored. It has only happened to me 2 or 3 times since 1999 but maybe that's plenty enough. Once again I can provide more detail...
So where does this lot leave us? I think that if you wish to use registry cleaners (and for some dubious reason I do) then just watch them like a hawk. It pays to know about the registry. Some folk say it's best not to use them at all, which is not bad advice if you are novice.
Beware when folk say I've used them for years without any problem. All machines have hiccups. How many can "really" be sure when they end up re-installing programs (or even the system), that the problem wasn't due to a registry cleaner removing valid entries at some time in the past? Because I'm some sort of nut-case for detail (and arguably have nothing better to do) I've definitely proved this can happen.
Unless you keep detailed records (I try) then you are hard pressed to even find the applicable saved registry entry in amongst the many that are produced by registry cleaners over a period of time.

... if that wasn't plenty enough, I would add that I do find registry cleaners useful as a "diagnostic tool". In some cases they might help remove the aftermath of nasties too.
It is impracticable to make a long term comparision of the "with -v- without" registry cleaners situation, so it is impossible to deduce whether they really help or not. My gut feeling is that they do help but I could be quite wrong.
Sorry that I am not actually answering the question but I hope the background stuff is of some interest.

You may need to print this.
I use all these cleaners for W2K/XP, each one specialises in a different area, you will with use, get to know which ones suit your computer.
Do not be supprised if hundreds or thousands of files are found.
Files are either removed to the programs backup or the Recycle Bin ( make sure the Recycle Bin is empty, before using the cleaners, that way you know the files you have removed )
All ( except DustBuster ) allow you to restore them back into the system, either by right clicking on the reg file in the programs folder ( example Regclean & OleClean > Windows Explorer > Unzipped, click on either RegClean or OleClean ) & clicking on Merge.
jv16 PowerTools, RegCleaner & RegSeeker both store in Backup on their main page.
Opening Backup allows you to either Restore or Delete.EasyCleaner removes to the Recycle Bin, if needed again, open the Recycle Bin, right click on the files & select Restore.
Has an Update button. Checks you have the latest version & blacklist.CCleaner, one advantage of this cleaner is, when Issues is clicked & the boxes ticked, it will tell you before you fix ( doing one file at a time ) why the file is there.
Configure the Windows, Applications & Issues panels to suit.

wow thnx that will give me sum reading n trying to do
The simplest solutions are the best and they are often save you money

regscrub is my pick...real easy to use and understand
Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

But some do not restore saved registries properly as I said earlier. They loose keys.
When a number of entries are removed at once they MUST be restored last first. RegSeeker gets this right but many others do not.
Look at the .reg files they produced. They should be formed "last first".
I can justify the above.
DerekW

Hi DerekW
"Look at the .reg files they produced. They should be formed "last first"Are you still a W98 user or have you moved into XP?
XP is far more stable & my methods change for the 9x versions. The reason I ask is, I have been using these cleaners on a daily basis on my comps & at least 3 other peoples weekly, for years & have never had to do restore of the deletions.
If the worst came to the worst, XP has Last Known Good Configuration, System Restore & 4 repair options.
I have never even had to resort to any of these methods either, after a registry clean up.What I do get is, a computer back to getting that zippy feeling of a new install.

Yes I am still using W98SE which is why I kept just to the principles of the way registry cleaners work, which applies whatever OS is in use. I could add a lot more but I normally try to avoid these gigantic posts, unless requested. Suffice to say I spent a long time investigating the way registry cleaners themselves behave and found some aspects quite disturbing.
Obviously if you never need to restore the deletions then it doesn't matter whether they get it right or not. I also accept that with XP's system restore (etc) you have other ready means at your disposal if a problem should arise.
I know what you mean about "the extra zip" although in my case this is only a gut feeling. If you have noticed immediate improvements across several machines then this is of-course useful and significant information which is welcome. If this is the case then it should also apply to older OS's/machines (possibly even more so).
DerekW

"If this is the case then it should also apply to older OS's/machines (possibly even more so)"
Yes, to a point, you just have to be a lot more carefull ( selective ) I am right now finishing off a 486 laptop & had just said to myself, time to make a phone call to let them know it is now running beautifully.

Oh, that'd be well above the minimum specs - my first 'internet machine' was a 486, running 95A.
More RAM would be better, of course, but that's not always an option with a laptop. Next best thing, leave plenty of room for the swapfile - using 'leaner' applications is recommended too
