I have had it with years of Norton Internet Security and my subscription will be expiring. I want to try free stuff for a while. Does anyone have best recommendations for free Firewall and Anti-virus? Perhaps combined rather than separate installs? I have read umpteen reviews but I want to hear it for real from someone who uses free stuff. I will buy something later down the road. Its gonna take me six months to completely get rid of Norton as it is.....

I have a dog named Prince Leopold

I like Sygate as it is easy to use and uninstall should you not like it. To get the best security you do need to set the advanced options for approved applications and manually set things to deny server status. For some reason server status is the default setting. They were recently taken over by Symantec, so far Symantec has not screwed things up yet. Then there is Kerio and Zone Alarm(it can be apai to uninstall, and new versions can cause problems. Free antiviris programs in order of performance would be AntVir Personal, Avast and then AVG. I know that AVG is the most popular, but along with better detection rates, you can get some support if you need help from the other two. The best security is to get a router from DLink, Linksys, SMC for under $40, then you have the best firewall there is a hardware firewall, with the software firewall to allow to control outgoing traffic. If you want the best antivirus program get Kaspersky! They are promoting a two year subscription sale right now. HTH
