Hello! I am quite happy with the free version of Zone Alarm. It always shows as being "stealthed" when tested on various test sites.
Are you talking about the splash screen at start-up?? You can disable the splash screen if you want.
As to what is the best firewall, if you ask 10 different people, you'll probably get 10 different answers. Probably better to try some, and see if they work good for you. Take care, and good luck.

There are several free firewall choices; Sygate, Zone Alarm, Kerio, Agnitum's Outpost(ad blocking, etc), depending on what features you want. Free antivirus choices are Grisoft's AVG(most popular, but no support), AVST(email support), Softwin's Bit Defender and H+BEDV's Antivir. One other free offer is EZ Armor from http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm which includes versin 3.7 of Zone Alarm pro and ETrust antivirus. It is a free one year subscription and is supported with a value of $49.95. You can refer to http://www.virusbtn.com/ to see how these antivirus programs perform in the Virus Bulletin 100% Awards and tests and then make your choice.

I feel Sygate does not seem to slow my system down at all, where Zone Alarm did, also I have Buz Me (Internet answering program) and just did not work right with Zone Alarm I had to lower the protection too much, but they are both good firewalls I get stealth with Sygate and really like it and AVG is the way to go with Virus Protection, I also do the on-line Panda or House Call free Virus Scans too.
