As with most things, "best ever" AV product is the one that fits a given need: your best choice ain't my best choice.

For AV scanner only (no bloatware fix-it tools or other security related services: just detection & isolation) my fav is ESET's nod32 (www.nod32.com).

But if you're a non-technical user who wants one vendor to supply all your security related apps in one massive, system stifling package then, I suppose, Norton is a good choice, though it pains me to type it.

If you want to see years worth of evaluations by the only comprehensive, objective oragnization focussed on AV products (that I'm aware of) then check

Norton is a nightmare to update, tech support is diabolical. Using Norton Liveupdate is sort of like having a bad virus on your computer.

Get NOD32. For firewall, try Sygate. Sygate with NOD32 or Sygate with AVG is easier than Norton with Norton.

Either Nod 32, TDS - 3 or Kaspersky if you want the very best antivirus software. Norton, quite frankly, is pathetic in comparison with any of those three.

Firewalls, pretty much any will suffice, though my preference is for Sygate Personal Pro 5.

Well if you check the virus bulletin website, you would see that NORTON is in a CLOSE 2ND after NOD32.

Norton is pretty good at catching bugs, but in my experience, LiveUpdate makes it bad value for money, even if it was free. A search of the archives of this site, seeking "Norton liveupdate" will show somew examples.

I don't know what problems you've been having with liveupdate, but i have NEVER had problems updating my virus definitions and such. I always have the automatic update enabled.

After reading i think, you all r lover of either Norton OR NOD 32.
but you have ever tried www.grisoft.com 's AVG antivirus s/w?
if no then try it & you will thing that yes this is the best AV s/w for Win OS.
the biggest part is it is available FREE of cost & protect your system from virus 100 %.
update every week OR in case of heavy virus spreading, day to day basis also.
i have Norton , McAfee & AVG all installed on few system, just to check which AV s/w detecting virus first & in all cases every time AVG stays 1st to detect & also to remove. :)
