best all-around computer protection?

Specs: Windows 7/XP
what is the best all-around computer protection? my dad's computer had some trojans and bootkits, and kaspersky seems to be able to deal with them well. would you recommend them? i usually like free stuff, like avg, avast!, or right now, microsoft security essentials. any recommendations? what do you use?

You used free tools from Kaspersky: TDSSKiller, and, Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool.

Kaspersky has its AntiVirus, but it is not free. >>There is a 7 day free trial<<, though, and you may want to take advantage of that for now.:

avast! (free) is very good. Been using it for years.

Retired - Doin' Dis, Dat, and slapping malware.
