October 24, 2011 at 05:00:53
Specs: Windows XP HomeXP3, Pentium 4 and 1.5gb
My Bel-Arc program indicates that my computer needs as a matter of urgency to download 48 Critical and Important updates. Yet my computer is set to automatically download all such updatesw. How do I handle this.

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Ignore it - and disable Automatic Updates because some updates from Microsoft can screw up your system and you'll spend days trying to put it right. This is because every PC is different and Microsoft cannot test every update with every possible software/hardware permutation.

I think that's exactly what happened when I recently had to do a clean installation to speed up my system again. Question: How do I disable it and secondly, how would I know which critical updates should I then download. I'm vusing Service Pack 3.

This morning I'm so fedup with this situation. Within a month of a clean installation my system is as slow as it was and I think it is the automatic critical updates as you suggested yourself. What if I do a reinstallation and disable the critical updates from the start? Can my computer operate without some or all of those updates? Thanks for your input so far.
