Hello, I helped my friend out with her website last night and while doing so I noticed that upon bootup there was an error message:

C:\Program Files\BackWeb\BackWeb Client\6.2.3.66L\Programs\BackWeb.dll error code 126

I ran AdAware, AVG V7 and RegSeeker and rebooted and the error message was:

Invalid BackWeb Version ID "6.2.3.66L"

I went into the registry and deleted all keys with 6.2.3.66L and rebooted and this time the error message referred to a BackWeb file with 194054 so I deleted that from the registry and rebooted and this time the error message referred to 1940546. There are about 15 or more BackWeb entries in the registry that refer to this number. I am aware that there are genuine BackWeb files and some sort of Malware BackWeb files - I am afraid to keep up this deleting from the registry.

Is there an easier/safer way to get rid of these error messages?

AdAware and AVG V7 say the system is clean but the error messages persist.

Thanks in advance
Tracey

Tryan,

"Im curious"...does your friend have a logitech mouse,or keyboard?or has she just recently installed a logitech keyboard, and mouse? The reason to why im asking is that backweb is usally bundled on the logitech cds that come with there hardware....

I recently discovered this when i was performing a fresh windows install, drivers, hardware ect...and right before the pre install of the software drivers on the logitech cd,it ask you if you want to install backweb,or wildtangent...

I also cleaned a pc that had a back web infection, and the only way to completely clean it is by entering the registry and cleaning a large amount of registry keys, and a folder, and also by killing it from starting up by entering the task manager...This was a few months back,so there might be an anti spyware cleaner that has updated it defs to clean it....

I would try SPYBOT,and ADWARE,and see if they are able to clean it up,or if not?You will have to manualy clean it....I wouldnt recommend you clean it manualy if you have know experience in the registry because the last i remember there was alot of registry keys to be removed..

TAKE CARE!!!!

Hi - I don't think my friend has added anything new or any logitech gear - she is a total learner and must have picked up BackWeb (the virus) by mistake. But of course BackWeb is also loaded with some computers out of the box.

I am pretty comfortable editing the registry. I have removed every reference to BackWeb from my boss's computer once and her computer ran fine afterwards so it didn't do any harm but I thought I'd double check on this forum to see if it was really a safe thing to do or not.

What would be the result if I removed a BackWeb registry key that I shouldn't?

From what I've read on the internet so far it would seem it would be no great loss.

Tryan,

It sounds to me that you still have the backweb on your friends pc and its trying to run,and therefore you are recieving the error message...

First thing is...Enter ADD/REMOVE programs and see if any program is related to,or is backweb and remove it...Then enter the TASK MANAGER and see if it is running, and end the process IF it exists...Then proceed to C:PROGRAM FILES-and look for a sneaky folder called,i think it was DESK MANAGER,and click on it and read it contents to make sure it backweb related and remove it...

You might have to reboot and enter safe mode if it gets stuborn to remove it..Finally enter the registry and, when you press the CTRL>F keys and recieve the search menu,Type in backweb, and remove the keys...When the search comes back as finish searching through the registry with no results,i would reboot your pc a few times and re-enter the registry, and re-search the backweb keys to make sure that windows didnt forget a few...

Thanks Joe, that's pretty much what I would like to do but I was a little worried I might delete something important. I'll go ahead and do just that.

Thanks again

BackWeb can also appear in the startup list, Add/Remove Programs list and the registry under other names. Such as: ActivSurf, Backwebagent, hp center, HP Info Express, HP Updates, Kodak Software Updater, LDM, Logitech Desktop Manager, Sccenter, Updates from HP.
