Hi,
recenlty the file BackWeb was added to my allow list in Sygate firewall, it has a a file in program files as well i have just blocked it but any ideas what it is?

Here's what I found:
BackWeb backweb.exe Automatically detects internet connection and downloads any available updates. Typical on Compaq and HP PC's but not restricted to those OEM's. Resource hog and often causes malfunctions. Available via Start -> Programs
Here's the URL:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/startup_pages/startup_full.htm
Hope this helps.

It is in the Hewlett Packard help/support files.H/P and Compaq pre-install it on the computers they sell.Logitech also has it bundled in some of their mouse software.Any way you look at it,it is ad-related spyware!Regards.JB

My HP came with backweb.. Its running in the background to download updates from HP.. I ran it for a year with 98se and it never downloaded a single update. Get rid of it, you dont need it.

hey JR. I have an HP computer and it had backweb installed when i purchased it, what I did was go to add and remove and deleted it from my system and I have had no problems, I do like alot of other people here do, and that is do all my updates manually..I recently did find the file listed in regedit, does anyone know if it is ok to delete this in regedit..I think it should be since I no longer have backweb on my system, but not 100 percent sure...thanx...

Marinersfan. You removed it thru Add/remove via the control panel?I have xp home and it isn't listed. The bwUnin (uninstall)file won't allow for uninstallation!I started running TDS-3 two days ago.It finds it and I can delete it with TDS-3.I'm wondering why it has to be so hard to dump on xp home.Regards.JB

JR,
Backweb is a seperate company, many software hardware vendors use it for updating or spying or both .
XP home.. Its a running process or background program. Are you getting a "file in use" type error when trying to uninstall? Try disabling the process from starting with windows , restart the computer then try the uninstaller.

I just killed it with TDS-3.Took the easy way out.LOL.I wanted to see how TDS-3 worked anyway.I zipped a backup copy of BW and have it waiting in the recycle bin.Barring un-foreseen side-effects,that will be gone soon also.Regards.JB
