so i downloaded a file and when it completed, I scanned it and found it to be a virus. I then deleted it right away and never opened it. I did a full system scan with Norton and its telling me that im infected with 'Backdoor.ciadoor'. I dont know if it came from t his but i assume it did cuz its the only sahddy thing ive downloaded that when scanned came up positive. But im curious if i never opened it, would it infect me ? Or jsut by downloading you can get infected, never opening.
I guess I am infected then, any ideas how to get rid of this ? The trail anti virus that came with this new computer can not remove it.
Please help, id hate to ruin my new comp :'(

According to Symantec...
Backdoor.Ciadoor.B is a trojan horse that gives unauthorized access to a compromised computer. Fortunately, Symantec assigned Risk Level 1 to this trojan which means the risk is very low.
It is not that complex to get rid of this trojan horse if you follow the procedures exactly as outlined in THIS article.

Well good to know its a low risk. My Norton scanned it has a High risk and i got worried. Norton also directed me to that same web page you linked but i didnt think it would work cuz it was for widows 95/me/98. I tryed following the steps just now but i couldnt figure out how to disable system restore on Vitsta. Stuck on the first one lol.

also, could i have got this infection from jsut downloading ? or would i have to open the file ? i never did open, scanned when it was completed and deleted right away.

No. The instruction is also for XP. Follow the instructions exactly as stated particularly with respect to turning off and turning on System Restore. If you do not do this, you will never get rid of it.

Yes Eyein... You can get infected simply by downloading... unfortunately.
As soon as any information enters your pc it poses a risk factor.
Malware is designed in a fashion that it pleases itself how it wants to give you grief and just starts doing its thing usually with no "permission".
Most downloading will save files to temp and cache files so in alot of cases you can clean them out simply by running a cleaning program.
To disable system restore on vista hold the windows button on your keyboard and hit the pause / break key near the top right. At the top left click "system protection" and allow it to continue. You will get a screen now that shows a drive with a tick in a box next to it, remove the tick. You will now be prompted with "turn system restore off" click the button.

Eyein,
Opps I thought you were running XP. Sorry for my misreading your followup post but I'm glad btk1w1 stepped in to correct me.
brk1w1,
Thanks for that :-)
