I don't knwo why but AVG is not doing the boot scan and I like it to be set that way. Does anyone know where I set it to do this?
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" by Tenzin Gyatso HH the Dalai Lama

I'm a W98SE type and on that system it is instigated by this line in the autoexec.bat file at the root of C:-
c:\progra~1\grisoft\avgfre~1\bootup.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVGFRE~1\BOOTUP.exe
I assume the same applies to XP. If you need to make the file just produce it in NotePad and save it to C as autoexec.bat
As far as I'm aware there is no option in AVG itself to start or stop the boot scan.

....oops, ignore capitalised line. I was making sure it didn't turn around on here and it shot off before I deleted it.
DerekW

Thanks it has been a while since I have gotten into the autoexec.bat file . Can you give me details of how to access it. I can't seem to find where it is.
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" by Tenzin Gyatso HH the Dalai Lama

You should find it using whatever XP uses for Search/Find Files or Folders. It should be right off C itself, not in any sub-folder.
In which case you can open it in some sort of text viewer (NotePad is ideal if it's on XP) and add either of the two lines I have. Case is not important but you don't need it twice.
Autoexec.bat may not exists though. In which case make one in NotePad with just the one line, then save it as autoexec.bat into C
Before doing this make sure the file boot.exe exists and it is the path I gave. Note that progra~1 is just DOS speak for Program Files (folder), and avgfre~1 is DOS speak for AVG Free (folder).
If the path is any different then use whatever is appropriate for your autoexec.bat line. Pop back if necessary, I've marked this post. You may get an input from an XP type which would be useful but as far as I know the above is all correct.

WHOA - HOLD OFF ON MY SUGGESTIONS.
I've just checked and understand that AVG doesn't do a boot scan in XP so FORGET IT.
In fact XP is it's own DOS so I guess the bootscan is not really necessary.
Did it ever do a boot scan?
Sorry, I should have dug deeper into XP before advising.
DerekW

Bootscan was only on pre ME OS.

Oh ok...I can't remember if it ever did a boot scan as I have had other urgent hardware problems to deal with and have only had xp on this machine for 1.5 months. I had win98se on it before and it did the bootscan then. I looked at the autoexec.bat and there was a line already that is this: c:\\progra~1\\grisoft\\avgfre~1\\bootup.exe\par
Is this it or should it be edited or what you said before everything is cool because it is XP? I can never understand the dos or not dos thing. Thanks so much!"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" by Tenzin Gyatso HH the Dalai Lama

I doubt that line does anything and it's probably a hang-over from W98SE. You could edit it right out I suppose but as it's apparently doing no harm I'd be inclined to leave well alone.
I'm from the UK but I'm well aware of the USA expression "if it aint broke don't fix it" LOL.
Good luck
DerekW

Yep I hear ya on that expression.....well I formatted before installing winxp so I dunno if that is because of win98. I installled a fresh version of AVG too.
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" by Tenzin Gyatso HH the Dalai Lama

If you formatted then AVG must have put that line in autoexec.bat despite what I've read saying there is no bootscan in XP. I note also that it is not quite like mine (double backslashes and "par" at the end).
Maybe what I've been reading is not 100% right. Perhaps that line still functions but you don't actually see it as a boot scan in the way you did on W98. That would make some sort of sense.
Another good reason for leaving it there I guess.
DerekW

Ah I see so it runs invisibly....sounds good to me....thanks! :0)
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" by Tenzin Gyatso HH the Dalai Lama

Yep, that's my best guess. I think it's probably correct but if you want a second opinion I daresay that if you Google around you'll find an AVG forum somewhere.
DerekW

Gee I forgot about that forum. AVG has been so good over the years! Thanks have posted the question!

Haven't had a reply from them so far!

It is put into the autoexec by default to keep it compatible with all windows. The scan was discontinued with the introduction of ME.

Date: April 14, 2005 04:41PMThe early versions of Windows like 98 actually boot in DOS and then load Windows afterword. WinXP doesn't therefore the boot scan isn't needed. Windows XP is a NT based OS not DOS based.

Date: May 21, 2005 07:35PMThis has been answered several times so in a bit I'll post info that you need to become familiar with including searching the forum but for now...
Win9x computers actually boot with DOS... the AVG boot screen just tests the initial system boot files before Windows gets to load as you suspected. This is an important scan to help ensure those files aren't infected before going on and currently there is no way to hide the scan (it isn't programmed to hide is all) so it may be a good recommendation to Grisoft to consider this but it has been this way since at least AVG 6 so I doubt if much will happen for these older systems now.
You may disable this boot scan if you wish but I don't recommend it. If you do want to run MSCONFIG and on the AUTOEXEC.BAT tab remove the checkmark for the BOOTSCAN line.
This does not happen on WinME, WinNT, Win2k or WinXP computers. They boot differently.
