Comment:

My Mcafee sub has run out and I am shocked to find the renewal is nearly as much as the original. I want to install AVG until I can afford Mcafee, but can I still keep the Mcafee antivirus turned on with AVG? THanks

Not advisable since they will "trip over" each other, each possibly claiming the other is a virus.

However, you could turn McAfee off for the duration.

Thanks Ray
I've got the Mcafee security centre, I assume its ok to keep the firewall on? Even though it won't get updated, will it still be better then the Win SP2 firewall?

There are some free firewalls out there. Just do a google search for "free firewalls". I use sygate but there is a free version of zone alarm and tiny I think.

Hi helenjane!

There are some highly regarded free firewalls:

1. Kerio at

http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

Will download as the full (pay) version and after 30 days will revert to the free version - which will be perfectly OK on your system and provide good security

2. Sygate at

http://smb.sygate.com/

The download is right in the middle of the page

3. Zonealarm at

http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/trial_zaFamily/trial_zaFamily.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en&lid=zassskulist2_trial

Copy and paste this link!!! Look to the far right for the basic free edition

The choice is yours!!! ALL are good firewalls.

If you go with ZoneAlarm (which is pretty good)...BE SURE to watch in the install screens carefully.

One of them will be a 2-column box where you make a selection.

Be sure to select the basic-version column (free) on the RIGHT. This will install the Free version.

If the Pro version is installed...it will stop working after 30 days.
