Heres a question I wish I knew the real answer for. avg antivirus free edition had a update every single day. I have never checked for updates on a differant day that there was not one that I recall. I bet you can check for a solid month everyday and you will get a update every day. While I know antivirus programs are constantly updated dont it seem a little strange to have one everyday? Symantec charges for their software and yet they dont have an update every day. I just have a hunch what avg calls and update is most of the time not really and update but just a checking in of your computer or something to theirs or something. Anyone have any other ideas as to what avg could be up too besides actually giving you new defintions and software features? Just something thats perplexed me for a long time.

If you are worried, run spyware software, or get another free anti virus software like avast.

Before posting try google. Backup. Use anti virus software.

You are gradually coming to the realisation that the majority of software out there that you pay for, particularly security software, is a complete ripoff given it can be made as good as or better for free.

That said, they're all useless anyway.

It's not sinister, there are new viruses and variants daily.

I doubt daily updates are "essential" so you could always shedule them weekly or use manual updates instead.

I refuse to believe theres a definition update everyday. Not everyday for 365 days a year and 3 years straight! Nobody is cranking out defintions that much, nobody! Theres another reason for such activity but I dont know what it is.

... then go manual, get them daily, and you will have the opportunity to analyze the contents of each update before install. The details are probably listed on their website too.

I've heard of some AV programs that churn out updates every TEN MINUTES.

Paranoia much?

Lets throw something else in the ring. If we look at it from that standpoint that they update so often then why is adaware not sending down updates to its defintions every day? Even adaware will go a week or so sometimes before its updates as well as any other antivirus or spyware programs that I know of. You see you have to compare the activity of avg with other programs as I did in the first posting. I compared it to symantec a well known antivirus company. Its not normal to have a update every single day. I can see so far noone has ventured to ponder for other reasons but have only decided that its definately definitions and software updates they send out. Just a few more thoughts.

You've begun to annoy me. Unless you can actually provide substantial evidence to prove otherwise, I'm not going to input any more to this thread.

Change your antivirus.

It muddles the issue to bring anything but AV programs into the equation. Ad-Aware and other spyware programs are quite different. I wouldn't assume that Norton is some sort of flagship AV either - browse this forum.

Stacks of people have been using AVG for years.
If they were up to something weird I find it hard see why nobody on any computer forum appers to have unearthed anything.

Have you yet carried out any information seeking as suggested in my 5? My approach would be to get the facts first then form beliefs based upon them. To believe first then try to find facts to support this belief is topsy turvey. Post #6 has clarified the facts, all you have to do now is believe them.

It has already been suggested that if you have an issue with AVG update frequency then there is nothing to stop you installing some other AV (free or otherwise).

Holy paranoia batman !!!! You really should worry about more important things in life . AVg works , takes few resources and I haven't had a virus in years so to me it is doing its job and I didn't have to dish $40 for an AV .

Ok, down to brass tacks, as to post five. I do manually update avg and everyday when I do there is an update. As for inspecting what the updates are. If you look on avgs website they say that information is only available for paid users. Now that alone is strange. Why would it be any more of a problem to offer the information for freebies as well as paid? Could it be theres a differance between a paid version and a free one? Lets face it, why is it free to begin with? I have lived long enough to realize there are no free lunches. Theres always a catch whether or not we know what the catch is. As for paranoia, I have been using it for years and will continue to do so I suppose, its more of a curiosity as for the truth of why so many updates, notice I said the truth about them. As for you not having any viruses, maybe you dont do anything that would merrit one. Hit the right websites or open the right attachments or dont use a firewall or not get the latest updates from microsoft. I have gotten viruses using avg but then again I suppose I do more than the average computer user and are more likely too. Im not in any way a dissatisfied camper, just a curious camper and perplexed. Can anyone on this thread not see the reality of what I am saying? Yes updates are common, very common but name me some other antivirus softwares that have a update every single day, every day! Oh by the way I just checked for todays update and low and behold bam got one! Now on to new buisness, since the only ones who can know what the updates consist of is paid users is there any bigtime users that pay for avg and can gather that information. Atleast the information that is provided for the paid user. That being said the paid user updates may not be the same as the unpaid, could it be? Oh the bliss!

If AVG keep their data base more up to date than some others then it is a good thing not a bad thing. Conspiracy theories are usually unfounded.

I run the Pro version of AVG on XP (until my subs expire) and the updates are usually daily.

Amen to #9, I'm off too.

I seem to recollect - some time ago - that AVG changed from doing one 'big' Update - say weekly or twice a week - to doing 'little' Updates much more frequently

I can't now remember the reason given for this

Does anyone else remember this happening - at least a year ago ?
