Subject: AVG Update Not Downloading
OS: XP PRO
CPU/Ram: PENT / 512
Comment:

I get a pop up about available AVG updates. The program is also set to auto-update once a day.

However...whenever I try to mannually update...the Check for Update shows the available...but when I click UPDATE...the server status jumps to "Closing Connection."

This has happened in the past a couple of times....but clears up after a couple of re-tries. This time...it just won't clear.

Note: I have disabled all firewalls.

Any suggestions appreciated.
THANKS

Hi;
I had a similar problem last night; the download would appear to start, but stopped at 5%...got hung up for about 30 seconds, then came back with an error message. Tried a few times,.....rebooted, and then it worked. Don't know why, or if the reboot helped, but...........who knows!!

We were having trouble too at work and at home.

However, for the download only, set internet settings on firewall to low just for the download and it worked and then after the download, kick your firewall settings back up to high.

You also have make sure your firewall has given permissions for AVG to work (access).

Go to Grisoft.com, the problem comes in after update 7 some odd or the other with recognition concerning the firewalls.

Other problem XP's own firewall.

We had Norton at work, but company changed hands and updates were not done because subscriptions ran out and the buy out of the company, AVG was suggested. I squawked at it at first, but decided to try it, it caught every bug so far and is working superbly.

We have 2000 at work and have not been able to do download at work, so I will check the firewall tomorrow, I have 98SE/XpPro dual at home, and the download worked fine lowering the firewall settings only to get the update and then kicking them back up.

AVG claims it is due to problems after I believe the last update 7 something.

Hope this helps.

I looked closer and realized.....the update that it's choking on is an "optional."

I noticed it after I had uninstalled...reinstalled...and saw that all the initial updates downloaded just fine.

Upon the last click of the "check for updates" this Optional item was the only thing left.

So....I'm just not going to worry about it right now. If you have the same problem...and your AVG is grayed out b/c it thinks it is not current...try disabling the auto-update setting and rebooting.

That should get it bright again....you can manually check for updates, get the critical ones as they appear, and not worry about the other till it gets cleared up.

HTH

Default Re: Google fake top page?
Managed to finally rid this fake google search. CWShredder crashed running when it got to Smartsearch and had adaware and spybot run and still had this problem. I found that Windows Media Player was hijacked and the wmplayer.exe file had a newer date and there was now a wmplayer2.exe (probably the original file renamed).

I restarted in safe mode and deleted this file and also did a search (remember to include hidden & system files in your search) for google in any file names (don't know if I really needed to do this), but when I restarted and ran CWShredder it got past the place it always hung up on and then was able to clear the SearchX hijack and now everything works great.

Man this is the worst one I've seen (I'm an IT Administrator and I've seen lots!!) I tried HJT, editing the registry and just about everythinbg else to get rid of this---short or rebuilding the machine!! and now this worked....hope this helps.

Red face Re: Google fake top page?

It WORKED !!

To everyone out there, i did try everything too. followed all the instructions etc etc. This persisted. i was going to format. (am a little obsessive about the file system) However this worked. I didn't think it was going to because cwshredder didn't really do a whole lot, but i ran it and finished following Mafia's directions, and voila!!!
I have google back!
Thank you Mafia

The problem happens because the FAKE GOOGLE runs a script that reinstalls an infected file everytime you open it. CWShredder helps rewrite a certain file (haven't figure out which one) that fakes www.google.com (as well as others)
Good Luck!

Just a note - I fought this all day at work,
until I read on their site, the firewalls are the problem for most.

If the internet settings on the firewall are too high, it will not allow the update. So I lowered them just for the update which I did from the AVG interface and it downloaded fine and I am not grayed.

Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've found that when the AVG update stalls, it'll usually finish on its own given enough time. I just click for the manual update and go about my business. Sometimes it takes as much as 10 minutes, but it seems to always complete the update.

Hey, I found out from CastleCops (that's not David Castlecop from Baywatch but Castlecops.com :-p ) that if you go to free.grisoft.com and download the updates manually, put them in the folder Program Files/Grisoft/AVG Free/Update, that everything works just fine. It's a little bit more work, but can be done in less than a minute. And for the price, well I won't complain.

Program Files/Grisoft/AVG Free/Update

My PC has been grey for a couple of weeks now due a recent update from Grisoft (stalled since last ver 7.0.323). Thanks DErifter for giving the base to this idea. The following has resolved the problem and things look back to normal now.

I have no "Update" file in my "AVGFree version 7" directory although, I recall, this was a feature on v.6 - follow the following steps for v.7:

Modified procedure from CastleCops ...

If you need to perform a manual update first you will need to get the latest update files from the AVG Free website at the AVG Free Update Files

Download the "Priority update" files to a directory on your computer that you can find later (Note the "Recommended update - u7f33861.bin" has no effect, so don't bother with it). You must remember where the directory is because you will have to tell AVG where to find these files later. I created an "Update" folder in the Grisoft/AVG Free folder thus: Program Files/Grisoft/AVG Free/Update.

After you have the files,

1. Verify and update your computer's time and date, AVG uses this info to determine if you have the correct files.

2. Open the Control Center,

3. Double Click on the Update Manager or select it then press the Properties button at the bottom of the screen.

4. On the Properties screen unselect the option labeled "Do not ask for the update source", click Apply and Ok.

5. Now click the Update button on the bottom of the screen.

6. In the pop-up window, click the Folder button.

7. Navigate to the folder where you had downloaded the update files into and click Ok.

8. AVG will update now with the file you had selected unless it contains the same as you already had.

That should be all you need to have updated your system, the AVG icon is now coloured and the XP alarms have dissappeared.

I've reset my Update Manager to "Do not ask for the update source" and hopefully, the next auto-update should work fine.
