I have opened up my laptop and done the updates for AVG. Was surfing(emails-Yahoo) and all of a sudden I couldn't see the whole page when replying to emails. AVG said that there is a dll file missing and it had something to do with an IE plugin. It was in the Sheel extension of the Control centre of AVG. I rebooted and now AVG and my firewall do not load into the systray. There was also an error(scandisk) that said that there is a long file that needs to be corrected or something like that which I chose for it to fix it. I tried to load AVG manually and I get a window headed by EXPLORER that "This is an illegal operation............". I close and it refreshes the page? There is only the sound icon in the systray.I try to load Lavasoft Adaware and I get the same error. I was able to load MS Photo Editor but not my firewall(Sygate). Got any ideas?

"Something to do with" and "something like that" are not much help. You need to note the name of the dll that was missing (if given) and exact error messages.

Well that would be nice but you don't always remember every piece of info when it goes so fast and you can't go back to it because it is not there anymore. Pay attention!!!! It is very unhelpful when people critisize someone asking for help!
Remember I said that AVG and my firewall are not loading now. AT ALL!!!

Thanks Derek I didn't think of an online scanner! Will do that when I am off this machine as I have dialup and only one phone line!

Well I tried but ie doesn't open. I get the same error that is mentioned. I can get into control panel but when I try to access anything there.....welll the error gets in my way everytime. Even when I try to shutdown/restart the same again. So it seems I may have to format? I hope not! What do you think? Would appreciate any suggestions that you can...that are helpful.

Bit touch aint we? It is very reasonable for those trying to help to seek information in order to try and find out what is going on. Illegal operations, for example, almost always give details.

Thx for suggesting I'm unhelpful, perhaps I should spend the whole of my spare time on these forums rather than just most of it.

As for the problem, I'm none too convinced it's a security issue at all (although I'm not "certain", before you explode again).

I would shut down and restart in MS-DOS then type scandisk c: from there to see if this fixes the long file error. Failing that run scandisk from Safe Mode instead.

Even if this fixes the scandisk error issue it is still possible that there is now a corrupted/missing file but we can take it from there as necessary.

Hi thanks...sorry got short term memory loss and I did much better than usual remembering what I did. Don't worry just that I have had this reaction a few times and it is not helpful . I realise that the more detail is better definately your right there as I am always going to friends houses as they can't relay what the problem is with the right language or to write it down as they go.

OK I ran scandisk from dos and I got "scandisk detected an invalid long file name entry on this drive but was unable to fix it. To fix this problem run scandisk for windows." Now it is doing a surface scan that will take 30 minutes. Will let you know what the results are. Thanks again!

Ok wasn't able to fix it but made a log file. Do I view the log file? Tried to get into windows explorer but I keep getting the original error mentioned above. Thought I may see it in dos but not sure what command would get me there. What do you think the long file would be?

Sorry, I've been on serious AWOL.

The scandisk.log file is produced right in the root of C itself. If you are somehow able to persuade Explorer or My Computer to respond then you just go to the C root and double click the file scandisk.log

If it won't let you then you can do this from DOS. Shut down and restart in MS-DOS which will take you to c:\windows

You want the root C so you type:

cd.. (hit Return key).

This will move you back one step which is to C.

Now you are in the right place you type:

edit scandisk.log

The text will come up on the screen. You probably won't have a mouse so you fiddle with the Alt key and the highlighted letter at the top of the screen to manoouver around. You can also use the Up/Down arrows.

Maybe this will tell you something but I have that uneasy feeling that you won't clear this HD problem without reformat, which means you loose everything and need a W98SE with product key.

Anyhow, don't let's get too pessimistic right now, see how you get on or if anyone has any better ideas.

Whatever you do DO NOT BUY PC RESCUE. It would take me too long to write about all the problems it has caused. At this point I have no choice but to try and save as much as I can and reboot with Windows XP. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!

Hi Derek I accessed the c drive via windows but was not able to view the logfile. Then I tried via dos but whe typing cd(enter)it said "bad command or file name". I typed "edit scandisk.log" after c:\windows and I was in? The window was blank and was titled c:\windows\scandisk.log .

Thanks for the tip Barry! Will be wary.

The scandisk.log file should be on the root of C (not in c:\windows). The DOS edit command is quirky. If you ask it to edit a file that isn't present it will just give you that blank screen - as if you are starting with a new file.

If you can see the file from Windows Explorer or My Computer then fine, you should be able to double click it.

What went wrong with the cd command (bad command) is that you didn't notice the two dots after it. The command is:-

cd..

When you then hit enter this will move you back one step up the tree. As DOS restart goes to c:\windows then cd.. will move you back to C. You should just see the C prompt.
If you now type edit scandisk.log you should see it (assuming it is there).

Ah thanks yeah I didn't notice the 2 dots. WellI decided to format and reinstall win98se. All seems well as I am using Firefox instead of ie. Nice! Thanks so much but it had become urgent as my desktop is on the fritz at the moment and I needed the laptop to do essential emails. Phew! Thanks!
