AVG virus scan is reporting a partition table (MBR) change. My machine has been having many problems lately with virus & malware. Can't seem to stop the deluge, now this. What is it and what do I do?

I'm not at all familiar with AVG and if it performs automatic actions as it's default settings. You most likely have a trojan virus that is causing all your havoic. There are a couple of things you can do. First, be sure the virus definition file is up to date. Boot your pc into safe mode by holding down F8 key. I would then disable system restore as some of the restore points are probably infected and any writes to the system from a virus being cleaned won't be allowed. Scan your pc with AVG and clean or remove any found. I personally use Avast and recommend this free antivirus.
Viruses may only be one part of your problem and you probably have spyware/adware infections as well. Spybot Search & Destroy, SuperAntiSpyware and others will help you clean any adware off your system and also are free programs. Once you have the system clean, enable system restore and be sure you keep your antivirus definition files updated and a good firewall.
