I finally got my laptop on the internet last week so to have some protection on it I installed Ad-Aware SE Personal and AVG Anti-Virus free edition. before that it was running about as quickly as a system with mine's specs and mine's Windows version can be expected to run, which is fast enough for what i need to use it for. but after intalling AVG and Ad-Aware SE, it slowed to a CRAWL, like molasses in winter. it takes twice as long to load Windows, and after i put in my password to log on it takes twice as long to load the desktop icons wallpaper etc, all much much slower then before i installed AVG Free and Ad-Aware SE. which of these programs caused my comp to slow to a crawl and how can i fix it??? i already checked AVG's settings, there is nothing about priority. and Windows 2000 (Professional) does not include MSCONFIG so i can check startup programs.

PLEASE HELP THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!!

Probably Adaware , check to make sure it is not set to scan upon startup , if it is this will really slow your computer down while it scans and the OS is trying to load at the same time , doubt very much it is AVG this AV uses as few resources as any AV out there . You need to go thru the adaware settings and make sure it doesn't scan upon startup.
