Ok, for the last 3-4 years I have been using AVG almost exclusively and recommending it to everyone, its been a really great program with no problems. I love that it updates everyday almost seamlessly and requires little in the way of system resources. Plus its FREE!

But since they have been advertising the new 8.0 I have had nothing but problems...

I have 3 computers I am on almost everyday, my work computer, my dad's computer (we work in the same office and he's almost computer illiterate) and my home laptop. I have had a different problem with each one.

Number 1, the work computer... This is a newer Dell Vostro 200 with XP and 2gb of ram. The first day I saw the change I downloaded the new free version. It crashed my machine and I would have to turn the computer on twice to boot into windows... turns out it screwed up the MBR. I un-installed 8.0 and put 7.5 back on and my computer runs normally BUT it can not scan for viruses because its not picking up C:/ so now i have to fix that.

Number 2, my dad's computer, this is a gateway with vista (aargh!) with 1gb of ram. My dad called me in his office just a few days after my 8.0 fiasco because his computer froze... guess what locked it up... AVG! He had the old AVG 7.5 but when it started scanning his harddrive it would freeze. I checked to make sure it had been updating and it had the most recent update. I did a disk cleanup and defrag, tweaked some settings and ran a full scan with no problems... problem solved... i thought! Next day when it avg popped up again guess what... frozen. I removed AVG and have had no problems since.

Finally, number 3, my home laptop. This is an asus eee pc, the 701 with 4gb harddrive and 512mb ram. I have xp on this baby as well. This is one of the weirdest ones, the asus is fast even with xp, i mean BAM! and your in windows. It started slowing down right around this time which I though was strange but i let it go. Then last tuesday i think it was, AVG stopped working. It is set to automatically update as soon as im connected and as soon as that update box came up it froze. Did a restart, disk cleanup/defrag, ran the full scan and found nothing. Next day AVG pops up again and freezes at the update. The day after it does it again so I removed it yesterday.

What should I do now? Upgrade the other machines to 8.0 and pray it doesn't kill my MBR or find another free anti-virus?

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Robbie

Im am glad im not the only person that has issues with the 8.0. I purchased the 7.5 version from Officemax. AVG sent me info on how to get the new AVG upgrade free. The paid antimaleware version of AVG not the plane jane free. So i upgraded to 8.0. I had big issues. It took over 7 hours to can my drives. BTW i have 8.73 GB used on my 40 GB and like 25 GB used on my D 160 GB. And 7.5 did not take as long to scan. I was very unhappy with AVG 8.0. So i went back to 7.5 guess what? 7.5 found things 8.0 didn't find. So all AVG 8.0 is doing is hogging memory its getting like norton AV its just "there" doing nothing. Have you tried AVG support? That may not do anything because you have the free version. I have e-mailed them and they hardly answer. There excuse for delayed response is

"Please accept our apology if you have experienced longer than usual response time from AVG. We are experiencing a higher than usual volume of e-mail messages from our customers now. Though we do our best to answer in a timely manner, you may experience an extended response time. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you and thank you for your continuous support of AVG."

And the box has "Award winning support" What kind of award? But that is a poor excuse. Oh and they claim they have no phone number i requested for any phone number for them support or not. They say no U.S. phone number. And i just plain out don't believe that lie.
