I have been reading on this forum that one anti-virus, even AVG is enough to ensure protection, my experience has been that while AVG Free Edition DENIES ACCESS to the infected file, it is not good enough to REMOVE the virus.
2. I am interested in knowing whether
(a) My understanding is correct??
(b) Is there any remedy/setting to make it more useful for REMOVING virus.
3. Can anyone clarify??

I've used AVG free edition for a couple of years and have never had a problem removing a virus. AVG moves the virus to its vault, on the off-chance that it's removed a necessary file. The vault can be emptied at any time.

little known fact that many AVG users dont know or never use is what is called rescue disk...this neat little tool comes in handy for the unable to delete/move to vault infections...so needless to say its a must to have and any average user can do it.so here are the steps u will need 3 1.44mb floppy disk to make rescue disk.

1. insert 1 floppy disk into drive..click on my computer....right click on drive A:,,click format..and checkbox create ms-dos disk.

2. once step 1. is done open avg and click service, and create rescue disk ...let it go thru process and it takes 3 1.44mb floppys.

3. once step 2 is done....insert disk 1 and restart computer.....then follow instructions avg with boot up in ms-dos mode and do a scan..this tool was made just for infections that run when windows does or boots up once you sign onto windows.

if u find this information helpful and/or didnt know about this tool just post as am all about helping peps combat this stuff..and for any tips or need advice on tweaking up avg just email me

goodluck.

I have never used Floppies so far and I do even have one floppy with me. I always work on CD,s.
2. Can the method you described above be modified so that only CD,s are used??

it would seem reasonable so am guessing copy all info on disk onto cd.... but 1.44mb disk are very cheap and it comes in handy for peps that are worried about nonremoveable infections and/or dont know how to remove them manually. avg is step ahead because useing the disk actually only has avg running in ms-dos mode so any infection thats on harddrive is there but not running...

there is a risk useing safe mode with some antiviruses as most viruses will still run in a windows enviroment..so ms-dos mode beats safe mode hands down.. IMO.

thats why avg is one of the best free software and if u find u like it, i would consider getting the pro version, show your patronage to the company for allowing use of free workable software without any end dates or updates stop.

best of luck.

I have downloaded AVG free many times for friends etc. However this time i downloaded the file and clickedon it to start the installation process and all I got was the set-up window. I pressed "sETUP" and unzipping took place (Unzipping Disk1.dat)but the wizard never appeared requesting serial number etc. I,m mystified !! (XP home)
Any help appreciated...thanks
