Subject: AVG Free 7.5 Install
OS: ME
CPU/Ram: AMD 1300/512 MB
Comment:

System is 1300 Mhz AMD running Windows ME and AVG 7.1 (free version) and Zonealarm (free version).

When I try to install the new level of Free AVG Antivirus (7.5), I get an error 'registry key HKCU\Software\Grisoft (current user) failed - configuration registry database corrupt (1009)' and I cannot proceed. I get the same error if I try to remove AVG Free Edition from the Control Panel ADD/REMOVE function. I am stuck, I cannot deinstall the old version and I cannot install the new version, I am in limbo.

Anyone else having this problem when installing the new Free AVG Antivirus level? How can I remove AVG from my system and start anew? I don't see any documentation on their site indicationg steps to do this.

Thanks,
Al

al743, leaving aside the known instabilities of Windows ME, it's likely your copy of AVG 7.5 was corrupted during downloading.

You've got a couple of options. One, do a general registry cleanup, then download AVG 7.5 again. The installation might work this time (yes, right on top of the previous installation - you've got nothing to lose). If it doesn't install the second time, you might get lucky and at least have an uninstaller that works.

Two, if there's no joy on the second install or uninstall, you're going to have to pull AVG out by the teeth. Use a reliable registry utility like RegSeeker, and delete every AVG key it finds; there will probably be dozens. Then use a good file finder, like the one in PowerDesk, to remove all other instances of AVG.

It's going to take a little time, but you don't want a corrupted antivirus program and all of its registry keys on your PC.

Incidentally, after the dust settles (if you're unsuccessful with AVG 7.5), you might consider going back to the earlier version of AVG. I use it on a couple of my PCs and have never had a problem.

Too, 7.5 is new and, as with many new releases, might have a few bugs of its own which need to be uncovered and [ahem] ironed out.
