Hey guys and gals, I need a bit of advice here. I have AVG Free Edition at the moment and have used it for months now. I've so far only had 1 real virus while using it and the removal seemed to go ok (Winshow.D).

Now, I keep hearing how AVG has a good track record of detecting viruses, but not so good at removal, one particular problem being that evidently quarantine doesn't work.

Like I said, I've only had 1 virus so far and it seemed to do ok at killing it (thought admittedly I had to let it clean it twice before the virus warning went away). But, the things I keep hearing about its ability to clean the virus and the inability to quarantine it has me starting to worry a bit.

What exactly is the situation with AVG? I'm becoming more tempted to switch to another AV, but I like to give programs a chance at least before I drop them. Thanks.

AVG is by far the most popular free antivirus program. The people that use it seem to like it very much, and appreciate its low system resource use. If you want to switch to a supported antivirus program and the 3.7 version of Zone Alarm pro for a free one year subscription go to http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index/cfm Like AVG, it is also a low system resource antivirus program that is updated almost daily automatically and allows for scheduled scans of your choice.

I installed it on a lot of computers with good results. No expiration date (as norton), very low cpu/memory needs.

However, their definitions updates are doubtful and sometime look like a placebo!!
While norton and PC-Cilin have several updates daily, AVG is updated each 2 to 4 days. Their update take 50KB whiles others take over 500KB...

Folks,

I have had AVG for 6 months now and I am very happy with it but would also like to know how effecive it actually is. Why is it free when NAV and McAfee cost so much. I have not yet had any virus problems though.

I changed to AVG after countless NAV2001 problems. btw, I just updated the virus definitions. It was over 300KB;

Jay
