Everything is going ka-flooey all of a sudden. Emails are coming in, but if I send anything with an attachment Thunderbird crashes and everything restarts. Sometimes Thunderbird crashes while I'm just reading an email. AVG does not seem to update automatically anymore, so am I infected with a virus? Links in emails and online links just come up with "website not available." Sometimes my google searches redirect to something entirely different than my search.
I'm no computer whiz, so if anyone can help in really basic language I would appreciate it so much.

Restart the computer and press F8 and select Safe Mode with Networking. you can install malwarebytes or super anti spyware removal tools and scan your whole computer with it.

You can also optimize internet explorer.
Open internet explorer > tools > internet option.
In general tab, delete all files, cookies, history.
In content tab, clear SSL.
In security tab, set as default
In advanced tab, restore as default. And Uncheck or remove tick mark from "Enable third party extension browser."

You should also delete all temporary files, temporary internet files.
Start > run > type temp > OK and delete all files and folders.
Start > run > type %temp% > OK and delete all files and folders.

Now check.

Thanks for the reponse! Okay, so I went and made all those changes to IE, downloaded Malwarebytes from the link you gave me and ran it. It found 9 infections, which it fixed, then asked for a restart, which I did. Here's the log from that:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36

I just ran it again after restarting, and it says it found no errors. However, I'm still unable to update AVG (and I couldn't update Malwarebytes, either...very strange). Does everything look clean? Am I good to go? Thanks again for your time and help getting my computer back up and running!
