Comment: The AVG Antivirus Resident Shield is causing Stop Errors with Windows XP. Has anybody else experienced this problem. AVG without the resident shield works perfectly.

Reply: (edit)There were issues with earelier versions of AVG and XP. If you are not running the latest version of AVG get it now as only last month they released a fully XP compatible one. I found with the earlier versions I was getting exactly the same errors but don't get them at all now. Oddly though I have found that very occasionally the AVG tray icon comes up in black and white :o}

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated. At some juncture I have had a "good" version because I have been able to use the resident shield with XP in the past. But I think the installer I have is old - I have just re-formatted and reloaded XP. This makes sense now. Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Success - I downloaded the latest trial version, applied my registration code, and it has not blue screened after the reboot (hence me being able to post this now) :) Thanks for the help.

Reply: (edit)I have a unique problem with AVG and Win XP Pro. We have these machines set up on public K-12 school computers. These machines have to run in a limited user mode to prevent installation of various file-sharing programs on the public school network, which is banned by the state computer services department in order to secure the school's Internet access. The problem is with AVG update. When installing an update, these machines get the error "unknown server or directory". This is AVG version 6.0.350, full version (date April 17, 2002). When logged into the admin account, no problem. So, how do I set AVG and XP Pro limited user to interact in order to prevent me driving 90 miles every week to update these computers? We don't have a WinNT/2K server available for AVGAdmin -- Thanks, Brian Beaver DMEC

Reply: (edit)Brian, I work at a educational institution also and have had the same problem with AVG issuing the error "Unknown Server or Directory" when a user tries to run an update with less than administrative privileges. I have found if give the user on the machine admin privileges just during the install and then take the priv away, then it will allow you to always install the updates as that specific user. Unfortunately, you can only do this with one user other than administrator. It is obviously a registry issue, so this is just a quick fix.
