Comment:

When sending emails I am sometimes getting a message from AVG saying:

"This is the AVG E-mail Scanner program.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that the message returned below could not be delivered to one or more destinations.

---------
Cannot open smtp connection to '212.84.167.235'
Connect: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host. (10065)

------------

Your e-mail message is being returned to you in the next part of this message. Try to send the message again.

Should you need assistance, please contact your administrator or your internet service provider."

Has anybody any idea why this is happening? It's not on all emails, just some!

Thanks.

Why dont you disable the email scanner from checking outgoing mail and see if it still occurs. If it does it, then it is something else. Email Scanner > Properties > Configure > UnCheck Check Outgoing Mail.

If he Disables it then it won't occur - because - as he indicates - the message comes from the AVG Mail Scanner itself

The question is why is the AVG Scanner making this 'mistake'

It think nerdtv meant:
Email scanner > Configure > UnCheck Outgoing Mail.

You will find that you will also have to do this:
Email scanner > Properties > Servers > SMTP entry > Modify > Uncheck entry at bottom "Activate this server and use for sending/receiving e-mail".

Note that there is a school of thought that suggests email scanning is pointless because your AV will always pick up any virus present due to it's normal monitoring function. It only affects "when" the virus is detected. There have been reports of AV's losing emails in various OE boxes due to corruption caused by their intervention.

thanks for the advice guys. it's not my machine it's a customer so i think i'll get them to stop sending through the program. like Derek says the emails are scanned anyway before they get anywhere so i'll stick with that. thanks again.

I've stopped my AV bothways (much faster). To do that, should you wish, you obviously untick "incoming" and the POP3 entry (incoming) as well as SMTP (outgoing). You will see that the latter two will then both show as DISABLED.
