AVG and .dat files

Hello, I have freeware version of AVG antivirus. It seems to work fine for me but I constantly get .dat files under C:\ What are these files? Is there a way of blocking the creation of these files? Thanks. Regards, Jean Jean-Philippe Beaudoin
