Subject: AVG 8 ProblemsOS: XP SP2CPU/Ram: P4 2.8/1gbModel/Manufacturer: Home Build |
Comment: Recently upgraded to version 8 from 7.5 Overview reports all working properly but it will not perform either a scheduled scan nor an individual scan. Scan history remains empty. The scheduler appears to be working as it resets to the next future time and taskmanager does show the scan program avgscanx.exe attempts to start but it does no more than appear in the tasklist for a moment and then drops out. I have done an online scan at trendmicro to see if I have any nasty preventing the AVG scanner from running but nothing came up. I also have another machine running W2K and on that one when I instal AVG8 the update scheduler will not run. The scanning and scan scheduler works perfectly but updating can only be initiated manually. Each time I try to enable the update scheduler I am asked for admin password ( Which I know and input) but the scheduler fails to start. I have several other XP machines on which AVG8 works correctly and even one that I've installed SP3. Only these two machines are having problems. I have uninstalled & reinstalled AVG on each without any noticable change. I may have to resort to reinstalling the operating system on the XP box. The 2K machine is only used as a network printserver so it can survive without an active antivirus anyway. I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Reply: (edit)Re-installing the OS is a bit extreme and I'm sure there will be a fix for the problem. A quick look online shows you're not alone in this regard. Your firewall could be the reason... Have you checked the settings in your firewall application for program control? You could always give Avast a go in its place... It will run on win 2k machines too.

Reply: (edit)I posted on the AVG forum and have been advised the scheduling issue with Win2K is a known issue relating to FAT32 file system ( which mine is). It can be resolved by converting the volume to NTFS. I probably wont bother. So far there hasn't been any advice on the scan failure issue so I might give Avast a go first before I resort to a complete operating system rebuild. Thanks I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Reply: (edit)I did the NTFS conversion on the W2K box and it solved the issue. Also ditched AVG on the problematic XP system. Avast went in perfectly. so far so good. Avast seems to be a bit of a resource hog at startup. I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.
