Comment:

I have installed AVG 7.0 and I have noticed that it starts scanning AT THE COMMENCEMENT of booting.
2. Can it be disabled?
3. Should it be disbaled?
4. What happens if it finds a virus which it cannot delete or cure?? Will the booting be completed so that the other Anti-virus can be used to handle the infection.

I also wanted to turn off the automatic scan (I'm sure it can be done), but was preoccupied with a worse problem caused by AVG 7: it killed my e-mailbox in Earthlink.

I didn't have a problem getting online, but no matter how I configured Earthlink and AVG 7, I had no access to my account. Since I had business to attend to, I uninstalled AVG 7 and reinstalled AVG 6; everything was fine again.

I realize AVG's support for 6 stops at the end of December, so between now and then, I'll either need to solve the problem with 7, or find another brand of AV software. Which is a shame, because I really like AVG. :)

Hi xetcetc and IronMan,

First, AVG has a new forum where you can post questions about the program. It is still in the early stages but it already is packed with a lot of useful information about the new program (AVG 7)AVG Forum

Secondly, I am running Win95a and I disabled the bootup scanner in my 'autoexec.bat' file. I also had it disabled in my AVG6 version and never suffered because of it.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Regards,

Phil

A bit late to say it but there was a facility provided to disable boot scan via the tray icon in AVG6:

"Run AVG Anti-Virus/Service/Program Settings"

I'm waiting for the dust to settle before downloading AVG7 but maybe there is something similar provided. I always reckon on using an inbuilt facility rather than autoexec.bat, msconfig etc if at all possible.

Seems like a good enough version , but the scanner seems much slower .used to take 6-7 minutes to do a complete scan on my harddrive but now it takes 20 plus minutes not sure what the story is there .

Hi Derek.W and vipergg,

Just noticed your answers in this thread.

I actually disabled the bootup scanner in AVG6 using the same method you mentioned in your response. I have searched high and low in the new version and can't find any such method to do the same thing.

In my response I only meant to say I had it disabled in AVG6 also and never noticed anything negative because of it.

For the AVG7 version I got the 'autoexec.bat' fix to disable it from the AVG forum. I personally just reinstalled AVG7 and selected the 'Custom' install instead of the recommended 'Standard'. Then when I was given the choice I selected NOT to install the bootup scanner.

It does seem to take a little longer to run the scans but they (AVG forum members)say it is checking much deeper than before.

It does have some bugs but nothing that is hampering the virus protection that I can see.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Ah well, it did the trick so that's the main thing. I shall probably do the same.

Maybe not everyone would agree but I only enable boot scan when I get new updates (when I run the whole thing). I accept that there is a slight risk tho.

Possibly more important is to produce the AVG rescue floppies. AVG6 needed 4, no idea yet about the AVG7 situation - won't be long.

Hi all, can someone post the link to the 'official' AVG forum - it's not mentioned on the AVG site map. I can find loads of other forums discussing AVG7 but not the one mentioned above.

Hi johnr,

Here is the link: AVG Forum

You will have to register your version of AVG to be allowed to post. However, you can brouse the forum all you want without actually having to register.

Hope this helps.

I stopped AVG 7.0 doing the bootup scan by:
Opening the file "setup" in the AVG programme files, (it has the logo on it). Choosing "add or delete a component" or similar wording, then unchecking "scan at bootup". Saves reinstalling in custom mode.

Alfredo - I was also trying to get AVG 7 to quit scanning on boot. Running the set up was the way to do that.

Thanks
