Just a bit of info for those out there who are experiencing problems when AVG tries to obtain an update. Just lately the update is barely connecting to the server but i found that if you add this to your Hosts file, the update works smoothly.

PS I am sure this works on Windows XP but have not tested on other OS's since i first posted this on the XP board.

This does not seem to work for me in Windows 98, I have added the IP & url to the Windows 'Hosts' file after the entry 127.0.0.1 localhost and it hasn't made the slightest difference.

Have I missed something? btw my Hosts file does not appear in the directory path C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

Hosts exists in c:\windows - at least in Win98. If it's anywhere else, I don't think it'll be read

I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

Hi i just tested on win98 it does not work, also i have noticed now that AVG have realised what is happening and when ever you retreive your downloads from this server it now shows the message incorrect database file, because the hosts tricks the AVG software top retreive from the AVG Pro update server instead of the crappy single wait forever update server. Oh well looks like i will be scrapping the AVG antivirus it just is not practical to use.

Just go to this page:

http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_updt7.php

Find out which version update your current have. It's in the Information About AVG screen of AVG.

Then download the virus database .bin file.

Move the .bin file to the corresponding update folder on your computer.

I have Windows 2000 and it's located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Grisoft\Avg7Data\upd7bin

I'd suggest searching for the "Avg7Data" folder. You should find tons of those .bin files in the folder. Just put your newly downloaded update file there.

Then, run the Check for Updates. Select "folder" and then point to this folder. Ok.

It will find the update and do the updates.
