Subject: AVG 7 Safe Mode Problem
OS: Win 98

Comment:

My problem began when I booted, AVG 7 connects automatically to receive updates but fails to retrieve, err_msg 'connection failed....' I tried manually for the 1.2 mb update but same result.

I ran Adaware SE and during the scan AVG interrupted 'Virus Found, MATADOWN.DLL - Downloader.Small.15.AZ' I allowed AVG to sort the problem.

For good measure I restarted in Safe Mode, ran AdAware SE, Spybot & AVG 7 again, AVG was interrupted 'AVGWB caused invalid page fault......'. I OK'd to the following rundll.32 errors etc until I received 'error loading Explorer.exe you must install Windows'

I exited via reset & here I am.

Has anybody experienced similar events?
Is there something that may still be lurking?
Or is this a problem in AVG 7 build 289?

I am aware there is an AVG 7 build 290 but I do not believe the large .mdb problem in 289 would cause my problem.

Your advice please.

Regards

M

this could be a false alarm , i have where when I run adaware that it thinks there is a problem and advises you to run AVG though there really isn't a problem . Have not seen any issues like you describe where it page faults or anything like , so far Version 7 has been pretty stable for me , you might to wander over to the AVG forum and pose the question over there http://forum.grisoft.cz/freeforum/

Matadown.DLL probably a false positive. According to various logs this has been in my System32 directory since June 2004, but AVG 6x Free (And other security progs) have stayed silent. Don't know where this file came from, or what it does (ActiveX Downloader?). Any info gratefully received
