Avast on access scanner problem

Installed the latest free version of Avast on 3 PCs all running Win 98SE. The first works fine, the other two show a red circle with a line through it over the Avast icon in the start bar. When you open up Avast the On Access Scanner is not available. Any suggestions? All three have been registered with the same serial number and all three accepted the number as valid. Any ideas?
