Subject: Does Avast automatically scan in the background?

I was wondering if Avast runs an "invisible" scan in the background automatically. If not, is there a way to configure avast to do this?
Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I probably should have been more specific. My question was kind of confusing. Avast definitely does monitor processes for suspicious activity in the background. I think Avast calls this On Access protection? Generically, it's called real-time protection if I recall correctly. But I am wondering if Avast runs actual, full-fledged scans in the background automatically. I am thinking "no", but I am wondering if there is a way to configure avast to do this.

the webshield setting gives you real-time protection as you surf the web. In other words, if you run into a virus you will be alerted and you can abort the connection from that website. As far as I can see, is that what you are asking?

XpUser4Real,
Thanks for the reply, but that is different from what I was asking. I am just asking about background full-scans. But it is funny you mentioned that. Because I was on a website today and I was suddenly redirected to some malicious, pseudo-antispyware/rogue-software website called malware-scan.com. The malicious site took over my browser started to perform a fake scan and attempted to download some virus to my computer, but Avast stopped it. It gave me the option to abort the connection, which I did of course.
Here is part of the log entry:
Sign of "Win32:Renos-AE [Trj]
So I guess it tried to install a Trojan on my computer. Weird. Nothing like that has happened before. I went to read an article on National Geographic's website, and then all of a sudden, I get forwarded to that site. I doubt the National Geographic Society is in on it. If so I am canceling my membership. lol :) But maybe they should be a bit more watchful of their advertisers. I did a little bit of research into malware-scan.com(just a little, don't know too much about it though), and apparently they phish for credit card numbers too.

Thanks Xp4. I downloaded and installed winpatrol. How do I lock the hosts file? There is an option called "lock file types" and I checked it, but I don't think that's it. Is it?

Hiya Meditation

I can't say for sure if there are any antivirus programs which scan files in the background full time while you use your pc. I can say for sure that if they did they would undoubtedly prove to be a huge resource hog.

How I use avast to do automatic scans is to set it as the screen saver.

I don't have to schedule scans as they will come on automatically whenever my pc isn't being used, and when interrupted, when the screen saver comes on next time, it resumes from the last file scanned.

I prefer to have this set, as although the very good real time protection and virus defenitions updates Avast prvodes is excellent, if a new virus sneaks through before the update it will always be caught at the soonest possible moment.

Hi btk. Thanks for the reply. I remember you. I saw your name again when I went back and read one of my old threads. lol, remember our conversation about our names?

What you said is a good idea with the screen saver thing. But my screen saver is almost never activated. When I am at my computer, I am actively using it. So, I'll probably just need to run the virus scan directly. Preferably at a time when system performance isn't an issue(ie. when I don't really need to use the computer at that time and the only reason to boot it up is to scan it).
