Avast! made it into the top 8 in the consumer report magazine Sept 2005 issue. Here's the line-up:
1-Trend Micro
2-Kaspersky
3-Softwin
4-Symantic/Norton 2005
5-Avast!
6-McAfee
7-Panda
8-Computer Associates.
Avast was the only free one and actually equalled Norton in this issue. The others had yearly fees from $15 to $40
The rest is up to you, you can save or you can spend....it is your choice.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

This article explains how the ratings were done. The ratings is charted HERE.

Consumer Reports also has charted the ratings for Antispam software (CLICK ME) as well as Antispyware software (CLICK ME) For the latter, M$ came out the winner and look where Adaware & Spybot stood in the rankings.
