AV or the internet connection?

Hello.. need some help with this..

My pc doesn't have any antivirus. Then I connect it to the internet, just for downloading windows update and new antivirus program (avast). Is it ok, or my machine has already been compromised at the moment I turn on my modem?. Thanks very much for any info and suggestions.

It is very possible you have already been infected if you downloaded anything from a file-sharing network or visited some possibly dangerous websites. Depends how long you've been online without any protection, but usually you can't get a virus unless you download something which is carrying it.

Install Avast and run a complete scan with it on your C drive. Let it delete anything it finds.

I had a job with your question. Is this what you mean?

"I had no antivirus. By just using the modem to get Windows Updates and Avast, will this have caused my machine to be compromised?"

If so, then I would say it is unlikely, unless you have no firewall either.

What we can't say is whether you have already collected a virus, if you have been using it for some period without an AV.

What's the time?

Depends how long you've been online without any protection..

Not too long, just for about 2 hours I think. Actually, the reason why I didn't have AV is because I was just finished reformatting my PC.. and after that, I connected to the internet and downloaded win updates and avast. Just that, and with my windows firewall turned on.

So, it means my machine is clean..?

you should be fine. If in doubt, do a bootscan with avast and unlike the other response, just move all it finds to the chest.
