Phil,

First question is, do you run a firewall? If you do, are you giving Spybot S&D permission, to access the internet?

Go to the Update part of Spybot, and click the "Show Log". In what appears, is the last entries the same. For like the last five or so. (or how ever many times, it said no updates) If they are, copy and paste, what it is, thanks.

Hi CrazyOne,

Thanks for hanging in there. First, I am running a firewall. It is Zone Alarm 2.6.88. I am using this early version because it seems to be the only one which will work with my Win95a.

I went to the Programs page for my ZA and it didn't even list Spybot S&D 1.3 It has my Anti-virus(AVG-6), SpywareBlaster, Ad-Aware 6, etc., but no mention of Spybot. Is this normal or do I have to put it in there with the rest? If the answer is 'yes', how do I accomplish that?

Here is the last six or seven entries from my Spybot Update Log. It reads like it updated but when I click on Update it just displays a message that no updates are available.

Phil,

By your log, you don't have the updates. If you did, you would have an entry, similar to response 6. Somethings not right. You said, that there is no reference, to Spybot in your ZA (Programs). It would add itself, to the list, and you would set the permissions. I have to ask, did you scroll the programs, to look at all? Just checking.

Was this your first install of spybot? Also, have you had any other problems with it.

Oh, this, is the standard includes, and this, is the beta. :-) You could, I repeat could, extract the files from the includes.zip (not the beta), and put them in the "includes" folder, of spybot. Your updates, won't appear correct though. You will be updated more than it says.

Open spybot (advanced mode), and go to setting, and settings. On the "Web update" section, see if "Download updated include files if available online.", is checked. But, you say it's not showing in your firewall...

Hi CrazyOne,

Yes, I did scroll through the entire Programs list and Spybot S&D 1.3 is not listed.

I originally had Spybot 1.2 installed. When Version 1.3 came out I went to Add/Remove Programs and got rid of 1.2. I also went to Start-Find-Files and looked for any stray Spybot entries.

I then downloaded and installed Spybot 1.3.

I just now uninstalled and then downloaded and reinstalled Spybot 1.3 again just to see if it would make any difference.

Unfortunately it didn't. It is still telling me there are no updates available even though my 'Includes' folder shows the date of the majority of items as 12 May 04. I downloaded this install from 'Downloads.com.

Also, for the record, when I go to Web settings the line "Download updated include files if available online.", is checked.

So if I am correct I am missing two updates right now....May 29 and June 16.

Unfortunately when I click on updates it shows there are no updates available.

Thanks and regards,

2harts4ever

Hi Derek.W,

Believe me if I could ... I would! That is my problem, I still am unable to use the Update feature with Spybot S&D 1.3. When I click on it (Update button) I get the message "There are no updates available" even though when I go to my Includes file the average date is 12 May 04.

I am using Zone Alarm 2.6.88 and it doesn't even recognize (show) Spybot in its list of programs.

Thanks and regards,

Phil (2harts4ever)

The only thing I can think of is to uninstall SpyBot, reboot then download/install it once more.

That's probably not really what you wanted to hear.

No idea why ZA isn't listing it but maybe re-installation of SpyBot will jigger it into recognising it.

Hi Derek.W and all,

No banana on that one. Just finished uninstalling, rebooting, downloading and reinstalling and still can't get Spybot to say there are Updates available.

I downloaded from 'Downloads.com'. My 'Includes' file shows the majority of items are dated 12 May 2004.

Got to get some shuteye now. Four-thirty a.m. comes pretty quick when you're 62 ...lol

If you come up with any more possible solutions feel free to pass them on. I will check back when I get home from work tomorrow.

Thanks and regards,

Phil,

Do you use a proxy, to connect to the internet? If the answer is no, go back to the "Web update" (as you did before), and look and see if "Use proxy to connect to update server." is checked. If so, uncheck it. I guess, just the opposite if you do. But, make sure it's properly setup, in spybot. The proxy settings. (What I said, with pic)

And if you don't want to update, the way I explained in my previous post. Wait a couple-to-few days, and the manual updates, will be available at the download page. (at your choice of sites)

Still have questions, in my mind, about that firewall. If it isn't a proxy problem. Might want to check your logs (firewall) But oh well.

Later,
CrazyOne

Morning CrazyOne, Derek.W and all,

Had a chance to check out the last post before going to work and here are my answers.

No, I don't use a proxy when connecting to the internet. At least this is how I checked it out. I went to Tools>Internet Connections>Settings>Proxy Server and under the last entry the line 'Use a Proxy Server' is NOT checked.

This option is not checked under my Zone Alarm 'Web Update' tool either.

As you can tell, and Derek.W already knows, I am a computer newbie. However, what is super puzzling for me, is the fact that all my other security and ad-aware programs have no trouble going to the internet and checking for and getting updates. And, they are all listed in my Zone Alarm Program page.

If you have any ideas or other suggestions feel free to post. This is driving me up a wall. Everything else on this aging computer seems to be holding its own.

For the record I am using a Packard Bell 4610 Legend, Pentium, 120 Mhz/72RAM, running Win95a, with IE 5.01, SP#1.

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Hi Derek.W and CrazyOne,

I hope you guys wander back because thanks to your prodding and help I can now say ....
PROBLEM SOLVED!

I finally decided to check out the FAQs in Spybot after a little 'extra' prodding. I came across a question about possible problems between Spybot and Win95. I read a little further and BINGO a little light went off in my 'aging' gray matter.

About a month ago I was forced to reinstall Windows. As a result, all the updates I had added prior to that were history. When I read the FAQs it remarked how Win95 needed the 'Winsock2' update. So I found, downloaded and installed it again and POW the Update feature worked just like the good old days.

I guess the old saying is true ... when all else fails read the directions ...lol

Just wanted to let you know all is well ... at least for now ...lol

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Hi Derek.W,

You're most welcome as far as me popping back in to keep you in the picture.

If it wasn't for the expertise and patience of yourself and several of the other regulars I wouldn't have a 'picture' to put you back into ...lol

Have a great week. Have to get to bed now ... 4:30 a.m. comes real fast when you are 62. A young guy like you wouldn't know what I am talking about ..lol

Thanks and regards,

Phil,

Yes, know about what you were talking about. But, in my defense ;-) that's one of reasons I asked,

Q: "Was this your first install of spybot? Also, have you had any other problems with it."

A: "I originally had Spybot 1.2 installed. When Version 1.3 came out I went to Add/Remove Programs and got rid of 1.2. I also went to Start-Find-Files and looked for any stray Spybot entries.

I then downloaded and installed Spybot 1.3."

Glad everything is good, and working. Yes, it does help, to read the directions once and awhile :-)

And a big thank you, to yourself, for letting us know.

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

p.s. You're only as old, as you feel. That would mean, I'm 120 :-)
