Hi all,

I believe I have a virus that prevents anti-virus
and software such as AdAware from updating.
A few weeks ago, my browser started crashing
unexpectedly. I reguarly use Firefox, but
Explorer and Chrome crash as well. I've also
noticed that when I do Google searches and
click on results, I will sometimes be taken to a
completely unrelated advertising page--a sure
sign of something wrong! Most critically, my
antivirus software stopped being able to
update. I was using Avast, and I uninstalled it
and installed AVG. Same problem--couldn't
update. I then switched to Avira which says
there's an error downloading the file when I try
to update. The manual update didn't work
either. I tried to run the Kaspersky online scan
but it said there was a problem loading the
java applet.
I am not particularly great with computers, but
I've seen posts about similar problems and
have tried:
- Changing the DNS servers
- I tried this advice (posted here:
http://www.computing.net/answers/se...
p-me-with-this-damn-malware/24052.html
)Click on Start, click Run, and then type
devmgmt.msc and click OK
On the View menu click on Show hidden
devices
Browse to Non-Plug and Play Drivers and click
the + sign to the left, you should see
something like TDSSserv.sys in that list.
Highlight that driver and right click on it and
select DISABLE - NOT uninstall.
Now RESTART your computer.
I couldn't find "TDSSserv.sys" in the list
- I tried typing "cmd" so I could type "ipconfig
/flushdns"-- when I ran "cmd", no window
came up, it just seemed to sort of reload the
system tray
- I downloaded Malwarebyte's and did a full
scan, but it found no problems. Malwarebyte's
can't update either!
- I ran Windows Update
- I rebooted my router
- I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling virus
software
- I downloaded Hijack This and have a log file available

At this point, I really don't know what to do.
Obviously I can't keep going with outdated
antivirus software and working while the
browser keeps crashing is really impossible!
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank
you!
