What is a good antivirus program. I do not have one and need one. I was told that some of the antivirus programs that you purchase and install on your computer loads it down with unneeded stuff and slows your system down a lot because of it (ads, etc). I was just wanting some recommendation of something good and affective. Thanks for your help.

personally i do not like norton. i have my reasons. its the only antivirus i have ever been running and got a virus.
it also uses far too much resourcs to be classed as effective.
norton can actually slow a xp system more than a virus

I prefer Avast! 4 home edition

It's free and I have tried AVG, Norton and McAfee, Avast! is actually the best one for me

I used to use Norton and mostly liked it however the Anti-Virus, Int. Security and System works were a real system hog on my XP not to mention it does a poor job on spyware/malware. Norton did very good on intrusion detection job however.

I moved over to McAfee because it gives an extra edge on "the war on spyware".

If you currently have no AV then yes I agree with Alan56 on AVG free.
