When I install an anti-virus program (Norton or McAfee), my computer slows to a crawl, especially accessing the internet. When I remove it the system returns to normal. I have run several AntiSpyware programs with out success. I have disabled startup programs to check for conflicts. I am using Outlook express and IE and my internet access is through Cable -TW Road Runner. I have been working this problem for about 4 weeks and would appreciate any help you can give.

Many people experience the problem you describe using Norton and McAffee. I would give ESET's NOD32 a try, or one of the free programs like AVG, AVAST or AntiVir. All of these are low resource programs.

you probably have the heuristics set to max. go into the options and turn off everything you dont need especially if you have the suite version of the software. Theose have spam tools, firewall, etc.

Try Solo Antivirus from http://www.srnmicro.com It is fast and uses very low resources. It works great for me.

Thanks for the timely responses. I believe that I have sufficient resourses and have checked the system resourse monitor. This happened suddenly while Norton completed a scan. I had been using Norton 2005 for more than 6 months successfully. No new programs had been added and all anti-spyware scans showed no problems. I am running Zone Alarm that could cause problems, but when disabled I see no improvement.

I will try one of the suggested programs just to see what happens.

Any other suggestions?
