Will an anti-virus also scan inside of zip files?? Why I ask is because I have AVG and I downloaded a wallpaper file that was a zip file. I scanned it and it showed the file to be cleaned. But when I opened it I then had the Tojan Keenen downloader. I scanned my system like AVG said and it did find it. I then let AVG do what it had to.I thought AVG took care of it but apparently it didn't. If it had detected it when I scanned the zip file it wouldn't of happened.

Some AV can scan inside compressed folders and some can't.

Here is a site that allows you to test this....

http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm

I tried Norton here ages ago and that detected the test string OK.

Norton AV 2004 scans in compressed files (zip) and kills any bugs it finds.

Well, I tried the EIcar site and I'm glad I did. I clicked on the zip file to test and as soon as I did VCOM picked the virus right up. So at least I know that the VCOM will scan inside of zip files. Thanks for the site to try. After that happened with AVG I went back to VCOM.

I also have VCOM Systemsuite - I'm just using their utilities. It's a must-have utility - go here www.vcom.com

That's what I have is the system suite. I'm using the firewall, virus scanner and e-mail scanner.

Yes it failed. I was very disappointed that it did. I'm not saying that AVG is useless, for some it may be alright. It used to be alright for me. But I do some downloading for myself and my kids and most of what is downloaded is zip files. The last file that I downloaded was a zip as well and I scanned it with AVG and it came up clean. When I opened the file AVG then popped up saying that it had detected a trojan. If it had worked on zip files it would of picked up on it when I scanned the file and it didn't.
