Comment:

I am a basic computer user and am very confused as to what my computer actually needs as far as AntiVirus, Ad-Ware and Spyware software are concerned. I seem to have many combinations of the above installed and if not all necessary would like to know which to remove. Currently installed I have NORTON ANTIVIRUS,SPYWARE BLASTER, LAVASOFT AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL (FREE TRIAL VERSION ONLY), STOPzilla Spyware Protection and Pop up protection (also trial only version) and MICROSOFT ANTISPYWARE I also have a pop up which drives me crazy for installation of Internet Shield (I have tried to remove this program in my control panel but it doesnt allow me to do so.) If anyone knows for sure what I should have or what I can get rid of I appreciate your help. I started with just the Norton Antivirus software and the Microsoft Antispyware but I was having lots of problems with pop-ups, etc.
Thanks

Hillbilly

I would keep SpyWare Blaster and Microsoft Anti Spyware.AdAware Personal was free.
You might like Ewido Anti Malware. The scanner is free.At installation you have the option of trialing the real-time monitor for two weeks. You don't necessarily need that monitor if you keep Microsoft Anti Spyware. And I wouldn't recommend using two anti-spyware monitors to avoid possible software conflicts.

You didn't mention a firewall.
If you don't have one, install Zone Alarm(free version)2.6.
You will want to disable the Windows Firewall as it is not a bi-directional firewall. This can be done by the Control Panel on my XP Home Edition. Not sure about XP Pro.
