Hi Adam,
I spent a couple of hours removing that annoying virus from a friends laptop a few days ago. Quite like many other trojan horses this virus doesn't just mess a couple of settings around, it almost grabs hold of anything it can on your PC and wont let go until you prise it off with a crow bar.
Firstly, (as you have done) I ran a full scan of the computer using AVG. This returned many trojan horses which were then "moved to the vault". This was a start.
Secondly I found that because it has installed other applications which run at start up and create pop-ups etc, you need to eend the process in Task Manager. Start task manager, and look down the list for any strange looking names of software, they ussually have strange names like "qifvnsjf.exe" and other random letters. I think theres also one called "Monitor.exe" which watches to make sure the trojans are restarted if closed.
Once you have stopped these, run "MSCONFIG" from the RUN option on the start menu. Navigate to the startup and services tabs and perform similar checks to what you did with the task manager. You are looking for random programs which do not have a 'trusted publisher' such as Microsoft or Adobe etc... Un tick any suspicious ones, especially "Monitor.exe".
Now the final issue I had with this trojan was how it messed up Internet Explorer. It stops you from navigating to websites and even puts fake banners on Google, claiming that Google is advising you to purchase there software! To resolve this I navigated to "Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable or Disable Add-ons" then looked for any similar, dodgy looking add-ons. I disabled them and restarted the computer. If the add-ons keep coming back after you have deleted them, you need to check AVG's scan logs for the 3/4 .dll files in the "C:\Windows\System32" directory and move them to a seperate folder where you should then be able to delete them. (Do take care to only move/delete virus files, Not critical windows ones!)
After all that, your system should be restored. If all else fails & you just cannot fix it, backup your files and programs and do a nice clean install of Windows XP.
Hope that helps, good luck.
Simon
