First of all, thanks to all of you for providing enough info for me to get rid of spyware on my computer.
That brings me to what may not at first seem like a spyware question at all...

I'm trying to use the MS Works spreadsheet to total rows, and the formula goes in fine, but the ONLY answer is zero.
This happens on the Easy Calc too.

Maybe I'm just doing something wrong and it has nothing to with Spyware at all, but
I recently put three anti-spyware programs on my computer: Ad-Aware, Spybot, and Spy-sweeper. I vaguely remember one of them while I was setting them up mentioning that it somehow can confuse the clock or cause problems with totals in Excell or something. Maybe I erased something useful trying to get rid of the evil CWS fiends.
Any ideas? Thanks. GREAT SITE.

If you saw a notice that one of you anti-spyware programs might cause problems in Excel then you might be right, though I have not personally encountered this problem.

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR FORMULAS - incorrect formulas are what I see people have the most problem with in spreadsheets.

whatever the cause, you might want to try a simple solution first:

make sure your personal documents and spreadsheets are saved to somewhere such as 'my documents' or a personally created folder. If you can, it wouldn't hurt to back them up on floppy or cd. (call this a paranoid just-in-case).

Uninstall MS Works, then Re-install MS Works. If something has corrupted components of Works, uninstalling and reinstalling should correct the problem.

If this quick fix doesn't work, let me know.

good luck!

Thanks, aosclay.

I tried this, and it seems to fix the problem if I use a new document. However, I really need it to work for a document I've already spent hours working on. I tried copying and pasting the data into a new document, but it just dragged the problem on in.

Any ideas?

hey alevi,

this might be a bugger (i don't know how expansive your spreadsheet is) but if the structure of it will allow you to do so, you might go through it and remove your existing formulas now that you've reloaded the program. Then edit your way back through the spreadsheet and reinsert/rewrite them manually. This is a very hack and chop suggestion, so take it with a grain of salt.

ONLY DO THIS TO A BACK-UP COPY! Create a back-up of it first. You might screw the whole thing up. It wouldn't hurt to have an original to fall back on for reference or in the event of total catastrophe.

I can only guess at the setup of your spreadsheet, so this might be an over-simplified suggestion.

What version of Works are you running? 7.0?

If so, and your spreadsheet is of managable size (say 100-300k) feel free to email me a copy. I'll be happy to take a peak at when I get a chance. Might be a few days though.

If your data is confidential or sensitive...DON'T SEND IT TO ME. I don't want to be held responsible for peaking at somebody's financials.

If all else fails, send me examples of the formulas, and in what context they are used.

Happy to help as time allows.

LATER

Yes, this is exactly what I just did. Thanks so much for your help. It's done now and working fine. Still not quite sure how it happened, but it seems fixed. Thanks!!
