Comment: Hi, A friend of mine just e-mailed me stating that his Norton is about to run out and he knows my distain for NAV. He wants to know which one he should switch to. Just anti virus no suites. This will also apply to me as I am going to scrap Norton in 68 days when mine is up. We do know about the removal tool already. I am leaning towards NOD 32. He however is a bit on the cheap side, so maybe suggest some free ones too. I did filter through some of the previous posts but opinions vary so much. All suggestions will be appreciated. Bluejay

Reply: (edit)I have tried Nod 32 in the past and it is a fabulous anti virus and low on system resources. However right now i am using Avira antivir free (http://www.free-av.com/) which has great detection rates and is free. However some other good free ones are Avg antivirus(http://free.grisoft.com/) and Avast (http://www.avast.com/.

Reply: (edit)Just for warning. You get what you pay for. Half my customers are people who are infected with viruses and spyware. Close to half that amount had free protection and had it up to date. What ever you go with make sure you have virus and spyware protection, not just one of them. I like Trend Micro 2008 but it takes up a ton of system resourses. The specs you posted are for a low end system so I would not run NAV or Trend Micro.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the responses. The specs that appear are for my machines, however I just added 512mb of ram to the subject machine yesterday and am doing my other soon. My friends is much better. I have been using Norton for years and have been happy with it's performance, but am tired of it being a resource hog. I agree that you get what you pay for, and I think both of us will opt for a program that you pay for. Does NOD 32 protect for spyware too? How is the one that M$ offers? Bluejay

Reply: (edit)AVG works fine , its been years since I have had a virus . Most viruses should be picked off by your mail provider upstream anyway if they any good at all . It is also a low resource AV which I still run on a ME machine with 392 meg of ram .
