Reply: (edit)It's not about a patch. If someone had not found out about this, Norton would have continued deceiving people. It's about integrity. Like Sony who has seem to forgotten about that also. Larry "Have no fear of perfection -- you'll never reach it."Salvadore Dali

Reply: (edit)What's the meaning of integrity anyway in cyberspace? If someone had not found out about this, Norton would have continued deceiving people. So would M$ if someone didn't complain about a posting at their web site that says all support for Windows XP is ending December 31, 2006. Like Symantec, M$ quickly corrected the problem. Reply: (edit)Integrity is integrity. Period. Cyberspace or not. "This gap problem occurred mostly because Microsoft is taking longer to release new versions of products, either intentionally of because of delays, such as with Windows Vista." This was a mistake on a web site that was not updated. Not a programming problem. Big difference. Larry "Have no fear of perfection -- you'll never reach it."Salvadore Dali

Reply: (edit)it was a part of norton utilities and norton system works, not standard Norton AV. I have nav 2005 and it isn't part of it, nor was it part of nav standard versions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, or 2004. it did come as an added feature of the pro version when that version was available. this hidden directory was considerd a feature, so recovery of files could take place. after patching it is visible and still functions the same. it's a carry over from the early days of norton utilities. before the threat of rootkits used for malevolent purposes(trying to protect deleted files for easy recovery)and it could be seen in true dos mode using hot directory. an app used in dos days that was similar to the list command. and used different colors for different file types. a good program to sniff out rootkits is blacklight from f-secure. (the standard version of nav doesn't install nprotect recycle bin at all) to anyone with much pc knowledge it was obvious there was a hidden directory with norton protected recycle bin. and those of us installing norton system works stopped that part of the installation. or deleted the nprotect folder.
