Hi Dog (and anyone else who can help!)
Can you help the Muppet again. Having set things up the way you recommended in your security page,I surfed a few sites and everything seemed OK. Hoooowwweeevvveeer....seem to be having trouble downloading things from my hotmail account (wvm and mpeg files). the computer is bouncing me back to the log in page!
also. trying to submit data on a few insurance websites seems to be causing the thing to throw a wobbly - not crashing - just hanging there doing nothing until I jump back . I guess its to do with the Kerio Firewall settings but where do I start to get thing sorted? Any help greatfully received.
Matt

I'll see what I can do. I don't use Kerio anymore as it was causing problems with hibernation of my laptop. Which version of Kerio are you using? Which browser are you using, IE or Firefox and is the problem there on both of them?
D4

Just to add my "simple simon" bit. You could live dangerously for a few seconds and knock off Kerio while you try the websites it fails on. It would prove the point.
If it works then, it's a matter of unticking likely rules until you find which one upsets it. Google can be sometimes help at that stage because you might have introduced a rule that upsets protocol/handshake.

Hi Derek
Everything worked fine until I followed Dog's security advice so I am pretty certain it is just a question of getting the 'rules' as you call them correctly set - any advice?
Matt

Aha, that's fine, sounds like you are already dealing with Dog who knows all the details. I tend to operate my Kerio rules on a relatively simple basis, so it wouldn't help if I intrude with something already mid-flight.
Derek.W

Go for it Derek. I stopped using Kerio when my hibernate wouldn't work on my lap top because of it. Using Sygate now.

Sorry, I too still use Kerio 2.1.5 so am unsure about version 4 and almost forgot it existed (ooops). I don't use hotmail or Mozilla either so I'm rather badly qualified to help.
Just the same I had a look through Dog's Security Ideas. They seemed jolly sensible to me, and I saw nothing there that I would have normally linked to any problems. If I was setting out my own ideas they would have been very similar.
You seem to suspect a Kerio issue, so I'm right back to my "simple simon" bit. Briefly disable Kerio and see if this makes any difference to the problem. It might not be Kerio after all, so you would do well to prove or disprove this suspicion.
Derek.W

Hmmm. I'm still on Kerio 2.1.5 and none to familiar with XP but this should do it:
In the Run box type msconfig. Somewhere you should find a list of stuff which runs on startup. Look for the Kerio entry and untick it. On my earlier version it says "PersFw" (maybe similar for Kerio4). It will probably mention kpf4ss.exe which is the Kerio 4 program file.
Reboot and the Kerio systemtray icon next to the clock should no longer be showing.
Carry out your check and when finished go back to msconfig and tick the entry again. Reboot and Kerio will work once more.
Derek.W

You should be able to right click on the icon in the system tray and from there enable all traffic, from memory.

Dog/Matt
On 2.1.5 you can avoid all that msconfig nonsense by right clicking system tray icon, going to Administration then selecting manual start. Kerio4 may have something similar. You then reboot and there will no longer be a tray icon (which means it is definitely fully disabled).
Without the icon you would then have to start Kerio afterwards some other way. If all else fails kpf4ss.exe in the Run box ought to do it (as does Persfw.exe on Kerio 2.1.5). Hit Return key after command as always.
