Am I being hacked?

Dear Learned ones...

Wondered if anyone had any suggestions....to a query.

I play an online game site and have been contacted by them to ask me to remove software that 'assists' in a game I play.

I have the software on my PC but rarely if ever use it. The software is windows based and does nor rely on the internet to run.

Question...if the software does not use the internet to run how would they know that it exists on my PC. I assume that an IP scan is being done..or something like that... (something I picked up from a colleague - not sure what it is all about)Or do have they got access to my PC...which is scary!!

I use Firefox 3 - i think and Avast security

Thanks in advance...chookle

I know nothing about online games but obviously they can see enough of your drive to see the software in question. It could be just a script in the web page to check for that program. Then again, it could be a lot more.

Thanks for the prompt reply...

Is what they do legal? How would the 'script'work?

Again...thank you

You just took the page source. The scan probably takes place when the game is being played.

Posting that amount of code is better done using pastebin. It's too large for forums.

if the software allows you to cheat (let's avoid euphemisms), then i would think that it must be modifying game files in some way? and the game requires authenticating to the game's servers.

It would be easy to believe that somewhere, during the interaction between the software on your local machine and the software on the remote server that you are connecting to, there is some kind of file integrity check or validation. If you and your cheating cheatie McCheaterson software (sorry, i play online games =) have modified game files, you would fail this validation check.

this seems more likely, and a long way off from the game company using IP scans and remote admin software to route all the way into your machine and look at all your stuff. actually, it's your computer reaching out and contacting their servers.

as to the legality of what they are doing, before you ask if it's legal or not, you should probably start by reading all the fine print in the EULA, that you MUST have agreed to, during installation of the game.

Firstly, let me put this into perspective. I have World Web Pro Dictionary open when I am racing another person to complete a cryptic crossword. The stakes are high at 8p per game. If I won every game in an hour, which i don't, I would scoop a grand total of 32p – so go ahead and lock me the highest tower.
Secondly, I have never read such an arrogant, conceited, haughty (let’s avoid euphemisms here) reply to a forum question.
From my initial question, it was fairly obvious that I am very much a neophyte here, yet you start with an insult with no knowledge of the scale of the heinousness of my crime, and then, I can only imagine through gritted teeth, provide a possible solution to the question!! You continue with a few more jargon filled sentences – most of which you knew would have gone straight over my head - and then, and I did titter, you move on to throw another insult in the form of an alliterative playground taunt.
Then, and you must have been stewing by this point, you offer further explanation and clarification on the topic!!
Why? I ask....I can only imagine that I was not the intended audience for the reply but that you were in the pursuit of self-aggrandisement among your peer group.
Thirdly, you took time to type a reply, so I have taken time to compose a cryptic clue for you.
Four letters – the clue is ‘add up intercrural foramen’ (5 letters and 4 letters) and you have a T as the first of the '5' and a U as the second of the '4'. (consider any euphemisms avoided)
Incidentally, capitalisation and punctuation require a little attention…homework perhaps.
Over and Out…….

Hmmm, a between the legs opening, what could that be? I know what it is in street language but I can't get the T and the U.

wasn't really fuming, just messing around. you sound pretty upset, though, even though i answered your question.

i can't figure out your clue without cheating.
