Dear all,

this is a avirus and a windows vulnerability issue.

you need to fix the vulnerability by installing microsoft patch, scan the pc with a nice antivirus program and then restore the file/folders changed to shortcuts which is explained in the forum below by eScan (MicroWorld)

hope you all find this informative.

Give us a little background here. What do you think may have caused it. What happens if you click on them? Do they still have the same names? Has the size of the files on the drive changed significantly or still the same?

My name is JRComp, and I approve this message.

Dear helpers, I have also had the same problem it seems. My hard drive created shortcuts of folders it had... I had nearly 500GB of stuff in it..and i dont see any of it. only shortcut of the folders remain. I have noticed that an exe file by the name BUOUFO.EXE had been processing at that time.. i have tried to remove it with Kaspersky scans and somewhat helped.. but i need advice on how to recover my files on the hard drive.

Thanking you for any help.

the folders and the files will still be there. if yo nt ok with command prompt, copy the shortcut name... say for example the folder name was "QWERT" and was in the drive "E"(which might be your pen-drive), then in the adress bar on the top of yr window type
E:\QWERT.
but don forget to use a god anti-virus to delete the virus from yr system.

this virus is a common one of late but i managed to recover mi folders
the procedure:
u right click on the folder then u go on target in
here u have to right the correct folder name for example
if the previous name on target in is G:\ziamuux.exe G:CARS 3000 then u will have to remove ziamuux.exe G: and click apply and ok if the actual folder name is CARS 3000. rember this does not delete the virus
my problem is which antivirus shld i use to remove this virus???

'Folder Become Exe' is a virus problem. The virus creates exe files in the name of the folder, while the folder itself is made hidden (in an infected pc, this goes down to many levels, ie the whole directory structure of the infected drive) .

Since you have scanned your pc for viruses (and assuming that you have got rid of the virus), just follow the steps below to set things right.

- download and install 'agent ransack'. It is a free search program that searches for all files (this is important as if the virus is active you might have difficulty in finding the infected exe file, which is hidden and not revealed by normal search)
http://download.mythicsoft.com/agen...
- now search the drive E: for exe files (*.exe)
- the search lists all exe files (normal+hidden+system) in the particular drive.
(just check one of the infected <folder name>.exe and find its file size, usually all infected files ie <folder name>.exe files have this same size.)
- from the search window select all the exe files of the file size (specified in previous step) and delete them or delete all exe files you didn't explicitly put in your drive.

Now you have cleared the virus off your drive.

NB: Ensure that the virus is not ACTIVE and NEVER OPEN ANY OF THE <FOLDER NAME>.EXE FILES; cause doing so just reactivated the virus and regenerates <folder name>.exe again in the directory structure.

To check whether the virus is active or not chek out the link

I got the same problem and the thing is the virus only sets the atrebute of folders and other known file extentions to hidden and makes shortcuts of them. so nothing is lost unless u formated the drive, i found out because my windows explorer is allways showing my hidden folders no matter what i try to do i hope that answers half of your questions

be very careful if the virus detects that you are trying to delete it it will hide your folders and itself as a secure windows folder file so not even a show hidden folders can detect it so you'll have to use shortcut virus remover you get from http://vsr.4shared.com to remove the virus and restore your folders and files
