Adiis, just in case you didnt see it, because the post is far down, i uploaded a new hijackthis report, but anyway onto my question, after I finish getting a computer back to its good state. I want to be able to do 2 things.
I know system restore is good, but not good enough, what image software is "out there" that I can get a hold of where i can make an easy image of my system and boot it from that disk on a recovery portion of the harddrive for future problems. My second question is, what best anti- virus,malware,spyway, and rootkit software thats FREE would you recommmend? Thanks

does it just reboot when you load the desktop or is it when a certain piece of software loads? Have you tried safe mode to see if it reboots in there?

As soon as I turn on the computer, it goes to the log in screen, np, It can be there as long as it wants, but when it loads the desktop, I see everything for 5 seconds followed by a reboot. This happens in safe mode too.

it sounds like there is something that is loading and then causing the reboot. Have you added any software since you cleaned up the computer? You might have to boot off of the Windows CD and run a repair. Not the recovery console but an automatic repair.

Heya doomhammerr

To get the logs Adii requires you may need to instruct the pc not to restart.

You say you get around 5 seconds of desktop time so hopefully this will allow you enough time to enter a short run command to keep your pc alive to run the scans and post the logs.

Once your desktop has loaded click start then run and quickly type in:

shutdown -a

NOTE: There is a space between shutdown and -a

This shutdown abort command will override any malware that are commanding reboots.

Next create a batch file so that instead of rushing to type the command everytime you need to restart you can double click an icon saved to the desktop to run it for you.

Open a new text document by right clicking the desktop, select "new" then "text document". Open the document and paste the text from between the double lines into it (paste the text only, not the lines):

===========================================

cd\
shutdown -a

===========================================

click "file" > "save as" name the file "shutdown.bat" (no quotes-"). Save as "all files", and make sure it is saved to your desktop.

Now you should have an icon that has a cog wheel in it named "shutdown" on your desktop you can double click to prevent shutdown and restart.

Be sure to delete it once the reboot problem is fixed.

course it is the live cd, so could i run these programs, OR fix the shutodwn problem from the live cd of ubuntu, and also, if i have a copy of windows xp, can i use the license off the side of the computer instead and just start over?

Oh bugger... Thats a very small window of opportunity!

The only other thing I can think of is to do a repair install of your operating system.

Although it is a good idea to back-up your data this process is meant to keep all data intact.

You will need your XP operating system cd inserted into the cd drive and upon reboot you will be presented with the option to boot from cd.

1. When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2. Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3. Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4. In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5. Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

N.B You may need to go into the BIOS and set the cd drive as the first boot device.

Using the correct xp cd is critical. You need to ensure the cd matches the installation you have.

It would be best to ask the guy if he still has it.

By the way.... when you have tried to boot into "safe mode" have you tried the option the "restore to last known configuration"?

This may be worth a shot before performing a repair install.

I'm unaware of any apps that can run a repair install aside from the operating system cd
