My first problem is that I am having trouble getting rid of a virus called ADW_RULEDOR.C -
I use System Suite 4.0 to do my virus scanning and it can't seem to fix the virus.
I also believe I have another virus, although I don't have a name for it. It seems to cause my browser to open up randomly, bringing up my homepage. (I used to have a hijacking problem because PopNav's site would come up when opening my browser) I think I fixed this by using Spybot Search & Destroy, although now I have a problem with my browser opening randomly.
I have a log for Hijack This, although I'm not sure that I can actually tell what files need to be fixed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the Hijack This log:

Rob,
You need to do an online Virus scan, you can find one at these links.
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
I like Trendmicro myself.
You also are being hijacked by a CWS variant.
You need to download and run CWShredder, you can find it at this link.
http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html
After unzipping run and make sure you click on Fix and not Scan only.
Then reboot (Not just log off and back on) and rescan and post a fresh HijackThis log.
Make sure you do this because you have more to be removed.
Have a nice day. :)
Trpm

Trpm,
I have used all three online virus scanners.
1. Trendmicro found nothing
2. Panda Software found an infection, but didn't provide specifics
3. Bitdefender found nothingI don't know if that took care of ADW_RULEDOR.C but I haven't gotten a warning from my System Suite, that it has detected it.
I ran CWShredder and fixed files.
Here is a current copy of my hijack this log:

Ready to proceed. Thanks.

My system suite 4.0 antivirus softare is warning me that ADW_RULEDOR.C is detected.
I've used the three online virus scanners you recommended and mine as well. Is there anything else I can do?

I'm so sorry..........I forgot to shutdown and reboot. Please Disregard the 2nd log.
Here is a log after rebooting.

Rob,
First put HijackThis.exe in it's own folder, it makes backups of the things it removes in case there is a problem. ( Not in a Temp file.)
Close all browser windows\windows and have HijackThis fix the following by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://popnav.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://popnav.com

These are optional but recommended to be removed from startup.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\Updreg.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.exe
Next make sure you can see all files and folders, even System and Hidden by following the directions at this link.
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html
Now reboot (Not just log off and back on) and delete the following.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pc32.exe bg <<This file.
C:\WINDOWS\System32\iefeatures.exe <<This file.
Now rescan with HJT and post a fresh log to make sure nothing was missed.
Have a nice day. :)

Trpm,
Everything looks very good now and is working very well, except I still get a "Virus Detected" message from System Suite 4.0. I have tried all of the online scanners you provided me with and I've tried correcting it with System Suite 4.0.
Do you have any suggetions?
Thanks, Rob

Rob,
I don't think it is active anymore on your system, it may be picking up remnants of the virus in the registry or a left over file.
Does it say where it is found on your system?
Here is a link for manual removal of ADW_RULEDOR.C, you could search your registry and hard drive for entries.
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=ADW_RULEDOR.C
Hope this helps aand have a nice day. :)
Trpm

Rob,
You also need to update Windows and Internet Explorer, download and install Service pack1 and all critical updates.
Trpm

The "Virus Detected" window that pops up for ADW_RULEDOR.C points to 2 locations
The first is:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{59E671FD-DE26-46B5-B3C0-58369EC0
I will have to wait to get the second one because I don't get detection of anything when forcing a virus scan.......A window just pops up and tells me that a virus is detected and where.
When trying to follow the path for the first location, I couldn't get into System Volume Information....(It said access denied)
Is this bad? Does it mean it is enbedded in some critical files?
Thanks Again,
Rob

No Rob, you just need to clear System Restore as XP won't allow virus removal from the System volume.
So very easily,
disable system restore;
reboot;
re-enable system restore.See if that clears both.
hth
iceblue

And here's how to remove traces of the virus from your Restore folder (This for winXP):
From Tony klien
1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
All data, including your virus, will be purged from the restore folder.
After rebooting, re-enable System Restore, and create a fresh Restore point right away.
--------------
Trpm

Trpm,
I have done as instructed and I haven't seen a virus warning since...!!! I thank you so much for helping me with this problem, as it really was a problem for quite some time.
Thanks to all others who spent time on this problem helping me...
I really appreciate it..
