ad-aware, spybot, spywareblaster.
ewido
free full version for 30 days and then becomes freeware version. (if not bought)
and I'm sure someone else has their favorites as well. microsoft has "windows defender". which along with the others does its part.

I got rid of Adaware and Spybot.... they just bored me to tears with their lack of keeping current. They used to be great at one time too...such a pity......
I have since found Ewido to be superior to Spybot and Adaware; more updates and it seems to keep current with the latest threats. If Spybot and Adaware do not update, what good are they?
Of course, no program is completely fail safe and sensible browsing habits from the pc user must come into play too. But if I am going to install an antispyware/malware program, I certainly would expect it to keep current and update, and Adaware and Spybot lag way, way too much..

Hello goodwrench27,

Spywareblaster is a good freeware program.
It stops spyware and adware before it even downloads onto your PC and it runs in the background so thats a +.

Good program.

Best of luck

goodwrench27, I would do a thorough recci on the internet first, check forums etc. (better to hear results from the users)
Make sure it does not lock into your system as some are a bugger to remove. Spend a while checking the more experienced expert views from the Computing Net Forum. A dozen or more on The XP Forum really know their stuff (and they give it free!)

nick: SpywareBlaster don't RUN in the background. Quote from SpywareBlaster homepage: "And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background."
